I am only 6 days post op, and when I came home from the hospital I really didnt have very many post-op instructions. Like, how much am I suppossed to be eating???? How often should I be eating???? they told me while in the hospital that I was supposed to do 1 ounce over a half hr period. Is that still true for when I am at home???? I NEVER feel full, and feel hungry ALL the time. 1 ounce of applesauce, jello, or yogurt is NOT filling me up at all. Maybe im just not eating frequently enough. Im pretty much not in alot of pain now, do have some discomfort which is to be expected, not taking pain meds anymore. I have NEVER been a comfort eater, or someone who eats all the time, which is one of the main problems I thought that I would have post surgery would be making myself eat, but now its like I cant get full. PLEASE HELP...any info would be useful.

Hi Anita! For these first couple of weeks, you're going to want to get liquids without restriction. Creme soups were my best friends. I'd heat up some Cream of Chicken with Milk and strain it and it was sooo yummy. In time, I moved on to sugar free jell-o pudding mmmm choklit! Cottage cheese and moving forward. The problem is that the part of your stomach that you're used to feeling as being "full" isn't there anymore. So you have to guage the size of your new stomach and what you can put in it. I've found one container of pudding works well, one string cheese stick is good, maybe 2 tablespoons of cottage cheese or a half of a one egg omelette. You have to take very tiny bites and take a while to eat. When you start to feel the food, that's time to start backing off. You won't feel the food in the regular familiar place so it will be a full feeling in a funny place. Stick to the cream soups, cottage cheese, broths and fill yourself with puddings, eggs, and soft foods when you can move forward Lisa

Anita! We are rebirthday twins! I had my WLS on April 27th also. You should be very glad that you get yogurt and applesauce. I am on clear liquids (SF popsicles, broth, jello) for another week. I am, however, drinking my protein shake every day and drinking at least 75 ounces of water. I get to add to my diet next wed! I have not been hungry at all. Just constantly sipping my water. Hang in there. Ask if you can have protein shakes. My surgeon and his partners recommend ProComplex. It has 55g of protein in the shake when mixed with water. Judy

Anita, I know, this just isn't easy is it? I am 21/2 weeks post op and still having problems eating. The first week is rough All i could have were clear liquids I couldn't do the broth, it made me sick so I lived on SF popsicles and jello. Now I am on the full liquids and eating about 1/4-1/2cup of yogurt or cottage cheese. 1/2-1 cup of milk in my protein shakes. 1 scrambled egg with some cheese. Hope this helps. When you feel it in you tummy then slow it down, chances are your about full. Be carful, it's easy to ever eat, I have done it 2 times already and it doesn't feel good. Good luck Kristy

No you are suppose to be eating more than 1 ounce. You basically have to set your on limits. You should have moved up to 2 ounces by now. You gradually move up. Your pain is probably from the surgery, not eating enough. So I expect that you are weak, stomach pains, side pains, and maybe even cramping??? Well you need to eat 2 - 2 in a half ounces 6 meals a day (the six meals does not include your water or juices). Your meals can be grits, oatmeal, applesauce, broths, milk, carnation instant breakfast. You may have chicken n' stars, chicken noodle soup (if you chew the noodles up real good and don't eat the chicken). You CANNOT have raw vegetables or fruits, steak, pork, or chicken, or sugar. Now I'm almost 3 weeks post op and I'm eating wonton soup, chicken noodle soup, oatmeal, a 4th of a peanut butter sandwhich, baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, mashed up green beans, salmon. At my 2-week check up my doctor told my I could have anything to eat as long as 1) I can tolerate it 2) No sugar, either natural sugar or sugar substitutes 3) Not too fatty 4) that I chew chew chew!!!! You just got to try things, everyone is different and make sure that when you feel full stop eating!!!!!!!!! And get some exercise just walking for now. Like walk to your mail box 3-4 times a day or up the street. Well I wish you the best of luck Sincerely, Brittany
