Open RNY anyone?
I am having surgery on Wednesday, I keep reading all these posts how people are coming home and doing very well. Congrats too all of you. BUt all of them have had a Lap RNY. I am having open and just wondering how anyone was feeling after this. How long before you were feeling OK? I am wondering if I should have tried to have it done LAP. But I would rather the doctor be in there actually seeing what he is doing. I just can't wait until Wednesday is over. Just need some reassurance that i will be OK after this. Have a great day.

Well, of course you have one big incision, which is uncomfortable (to whatever pain level consider "uncomfortable") for about a week. I had trouble sitting upright enough in a soft chair or sofa to stand up by myself for about 10 days, but had no problems after that. My surgeon says he only does open for three reasons:
1) You get in and out faster,
2) You can see what you need to do with the naked eye, and
3) There is less chance of introducing something that could cause infection.
I have had one minor complication: Apparently, my body had a reaction to the internal, dissolvable sutures, and as a result, I have three seromas (blisters that leak serous fluid). My surgeon says that once the internal sutures have dissolved, it should stop (about another two or three weeks). Messy, but not an issue.
Not for one minute do I regret the decision! After marrying Linda, this is the best move I've made in my entire life. I've lost over 50 lbs in the first six weeks and I know that this is just the beginning of an exciting year and a healthier life.
Yeah, the delays were maddening and, given I've been prone to bouts of depression over my life, could have made me spiral down. Thank heavens for Wellbutrin XL! If I have one regret, it's that I didn't get it done on 1/19 as I was supposed to, for two reasons:
1) I'd be even lighter right now!
2) A job that was being held open for me had to be given out due to the delay.
Beyond that, no regrets. No looking back. Onward and downward!!
hi
i had open rny on 4/11/05
i can say it was painful when i first woke up in recovery but the morphine helped alot during those first few days.
now that i am home i am on roxicet (sp) as needed and i take it about 4to5 times a day. everyday has gotten a little better. i have a 3 1/2 in scar running from just below the breast bone. they used derma bond to close the skin so there has never been a bandage on it.
seems to be healing nicely. i have been on protein drinks and water and broth and am starting to get hungry for real food which i guess is a good sign. if you want to know anything else please e-mail me. good luck with you surgery nadine
Good Luck to you! I'm having Open on Wednesday the 20th also, my sisters and mom have all had open and the pain wasn't that bad they said! I can tolerate pain a lot more then they can so I'm sure it won't be that bad just remember keep hitting your morphine pump that sure is good stuff! Again~GOOD LUCK~
