Crushed Meds

Here is a way I figured out to get in these nasty tasteing crushed meds I have to take for now. I have not had a blood pressure pill since the night before surjury. My blood pressure has stayed 118/70 to 130/90 ish... ... I still take paxil and my aciphex 20 mg day so I put em in a snack size zip lock bag, crushed em with a hammer, snipped the end off that contained the med, and sprinkled it on top of 1 oz of my protein shake, then down it went. It had a very slight after taste, nothing too bad. On top of the shake it just sat there and went down with the shake, in one swallow. A quick and easy way to go down. If you find another way that is even better please let me know. I am all for quick, easy and painless!...

The prevacid equivalent I was proscribed says - don't crush. I decided to check with the surgeons office and was told that pills smaller than a tylenol can be swallowed whole. Check with your surgeon.

I guess I should have added, I did check with my surgeon and he told me I could cru**** I dont know how it will affect the medication but I guessed taking in a little might be better than taking in none at all. I do have a pill cutter here so maybe it would work to cut it into fourths? I will have to work on this one...Thanks!

Check with the pharmacist also. I've been able to take my pills just broken in half but I haven't really had any problems with anything yet - except the Diet Snapple. I found out real fast what dumping feels like. Didn't like it at all. Are you really able to eat SF pudding? I read that and tried to call Hubby who was at HEB but he didn't take his phone. I want that! Lisa

I'm not having to crush my meds. They're not huge pills but they're going down just fine. Have you tried taking them without crushing? I just break em in half. Lisa

Yeah I thought about it but pre op I read a post where someone had problems and they did a EGD post op ( like a few weeks ) and they found uncrushed pills in the pouch that had not gone through, so Im kinda leary just yet to chance it...

You also might want to ask your pharmacist about a pill crusher. I have one (and a pill splitter) which might be easier than having to use a hammer. A

Be Careful! I am pre op still, but I took all my pills to my favorite pharmicist and he told me which ones I could and could not crush, sprinkle, etc. Soem are totally null and void. Better ask first. Liek allergy pills, any time released, like aceiphex cannot be crushed. Barb in CA

Thanks Barbara! I am going to call my gastroenterologist Monday and ask the nurse practioner if they can call me in a liquid equivalent to the aciphex. I know zantac comes in liquid form, ot sure if it is equivalent to aciphex or not but I would feel better having a liquid anyway for at least the first 3 months. Hugs, Sandy
