Feeling full, love/hate relationship?

Okay all, I have had a revelation... of sorts, .... I just read Lara's post in another thread about eating denser foods to achieve satiety and how it can make you feel like throwing up. This made me think... (scary, I know) and realize how much I AVOID eating dense foods, because I HATE the way it feels to be full. Is that nuts or what? I truly hate the way it feels to be full. I'm not talking about the "OMG, I took one bite too many and it's crawling up the throat!" feeling, I mean, just getting full/satisfied is not comfortable to me. When I think about it, I avoid eating so many foods because of this. I don't touch most meats or eggs. I'll only eat soft-meats, in the form of deli-slices or something I know is fork-tender or that I cooked myself. The only foods I've physically had to get sick over (due to the nausea and fullness) were meats. Other foods make me feel awfully full very fast too, and I do avoid them... I wonder if it's because I want to physically EAT more quantity sometimes--- or if it's truly because I want to avoid getting "full"...?? This avoidance of eating dense proteins leads to grazing, eating soft foods, drinking calories and sometimes eating too much/wrong foods. I can see how this could be the downfall of the RNY for someone like me. (I've got those awful horrendous stats floating in my head from the www.prevention.com article about regain...) _____________________________________________________________ Are you bothered by the full feeling? Do you know when to stop eating? Do you get that crawling up the throat feeling, even if you eat a measured portion? _____________________________________________________________ -beth... full and not liking it... 313/298/149/130 www.meltingmama.blogspot.com/ New pix in profile, too...

Hi Beth. First off I enjoy reading your posts everyday. You provided me with vaulable information and it's nice to see everyones daily food intake.... Thanks for posting these. Ok answer to your questions: ........ "Are you bothered by the full feeling"? No, but now it seems it's harder to figure out when I am full. I ate 5oz of chix and veggies for lunch and felt full but knew I could eat more. The old, "damn,,,that tastes good" has overcome me and I want to eat more. I do try and stop this. "Do you know when to stop eating"? Only if I measure my food when I take it to work. If I am out to dinner I eat till I am full then push my plate away, even knowing I've eaten more than I should. "Do you get that crawling up the throat feeling, even if you eat a measured portion"? Only when I eat tuna and turkey. Those tend to 'stick in my throat' Since surgery I've never been able to digest them. I maily eat chicken, salmon, fish, chili, beans. Maybe, you don't want that full feeling because it makes you think you might gain weight? I know it's a struggle, but I offer you my best support. You rock ! Hi Beth, Glad I could help you think. I know that when I'm feeling "snacky" sometimes it comes with an emotional component of feeling "entitled to a snack.. . entitled to a nice large snack" - it is during this type of feeling that I catch myself snacking on grazeable foods. I hate feeling like that more than anything - because it tells me how much farther I have yet to go in my headwork. *sigh* At least I'm conscious of it I spose. Are you bothered by the full feeling? I actually like the full feeling, I dislike feeling hungry, like when my pouch is gnawing at itself. I don't like the OVERFILL full feeling. . .that stinks and precipitates vomiting. Do you know when to stop eating? I don't get the message until too late sometimes. I have to be careful to portion out my food or I'm setting myself up for a vomiting session. Most of the time my pouch IS telling me I'm full, it's my brain and mouth going "but no, I like this food I want some more. . .you can eat it. . .it's just one more bite. . . .three more bites. . . ." When I fail to listen, I get to enjoy the consequences. I try really hard to listen well these days. Do you get that crawling up the throat feeling, even if you eat a measured portion? That crawling up the throat feeling happens after I eat certain foods. Some swell in the pouch and what was a small amout suddenly and magically become 3 times larger. The crawling up the throat feeling is WORSE when I'm eating while under stress. When I'm anxious pouchy gets TINY and crabby. I am allowed to eat only about 1/2 of the amount I eat when I'm feeling fine. If I listen to my pouch I get to keep my food. If I try to pu**** I always get sick. So in short - I like to feel full, I hate to get sick, I'm a moron who can be talked into overfilling my pouch by my mouth and brain, my pouch is an emotional little girl, and it magically changes sizes from moment to moment. Hugs for my Beth, ~Lara PS - can you tell I'm home sick today?

Wow, what you posted reminded me of what someone posted way back (perhaps on another board.) Shey said, post op, when she eats, she always feels full. That led her to feel that old guilty feeling of binge eating and subsequent failure, so then she wanted to eat more. Strange what our minds can do to us. I guess I was lucky to stumble on a study a WLS doc did with her patients. She strongly recommend to eat all of your calories to remain satiated longer. I don't drink protien shakes. I do drink liquid protien drinks, but they are only 90 calories and give me the extra boost of protien I need in a day. the article made me realize early out that it is ok to eat...its actually a good thing. As far as your question for me personally. I don't like feeling full, but if I over do it...what can I do but try not to the next time. I do great with portion control 3 weeks out of the month...then I'm crazy head hungry for one week, so I don't stop eating. Its almost like my stomach believes my head, cuz I don't feel full either, yet I know the next week I wouldn't be able to eat that same amount (am I making any sense here?) And no I never get that crawling up feeling unless I really endulge, but that rare. But I think for me is, I never had a 'full trigger' before. I literally could eat and eat and eat....and eat some more. I did not understand the meaning of "I can't eat another bite". So I like feeling full...finally. Rachel, Finally full and loving it.
