Question for all postops
My doctor did not specify how long but he wanted me to goal for a year, he did tell me that I will loose most of my weight in the first 6-9 months, which entering month five I am glad I lost the 53 lbs I did but I wish I would have lost more. I still need to loose 55lbs. to my goal. I am not even half way there. Based on the postings I have lost the least amount in this time period.
I started at 258
Weight today 205
Goal 148

Donna,
My doctor never told me specifics. He did tell me I should be to my goal within one year - I needed to lose 102 lbs. You can see that everyone loses at different rates when you check out the postings on the boards, though.
I started at 246 and now I'm 184 - 62 lbs down. My goal is 144.
Good luck!

Rather than talking with my surgeon about goal weight, I went to a Metabolic and human performance specialist (the kind that high caliber athletes go to) - he works at a local college, and was able to tell me my true BMI, and set a goal weight that is realistic to someone with my bone density and muscle mass.
Before I started my journey I weighed over 400lbs. Day of my surgery I weighed 355. Today I weigh 260. I am at my goal weight that was set at that appointment. I am in the process of scheduling a new appointment with him so I can be reevaluated to understand how much fat vs. lean mass I have lost, check on my metabolic rate, and set a new goal weight (I'm still losing)
We NEVER discussed time. He said ultimately that it is easier to lose the first year, but never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd be at my goal weight at month 5.
PS - when I told my surgeon I had gone to a specialist, he asked for his goals for me, when I told them to him he said "sounds good" rather passively. . .he seemed fine to defer to a fellow expert.
Best of luck to you,
~Lara
I'm a little over halfway to my goal. The doctor told me his goal was for me to get to 170 lbs. He said I could lose more than that, but that would put me out of the danger zone for weight related illnesses. He never gave me a time limit, but said I was right on track with being at 55 lbs loss at my last visit.
I found the cool tool on this website for seeing what your expected weight loss would be: http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/postopplanner.phtml
My doctor told me I could expect to reach what they consider my goal weight (70% of my body fat, i.e. 200 pounds) 1.5 years after surgery.
To date I have lost 90 pounds which is 45% of my total body fat so according to him I'm over half way. I guess they really think things will slow down.

My doctor said on average it takes about a year, although he said patients will lose more than half of what they have to lose in the 1st 6 months.
My start weight (the morning of surgery) was 280. I am down to 205. Its been about 4½ months.
The last time I saw my surgeon, he said for me, individually, he thinks I'll be pretty close to goal by Christmastime, which will be about 8½ months postop.
