Hey yall..Im 5 weeks out...Over the past few days I havent been able to hold any real food down, I throw up almost everytime I even eat a few bites..But today, I went out to get my kids some ice cream..I feel bad admitting this because I know better, But i had a banana split...THE WHOLE THING....and I was actually able to keep that down!! I didn't feel sick or anything..But a lil over an hour later I had some diarrhea...How is it that "good" food for me makes throw up...and "bad " food I can tolerate..I was sure all the sugar in it would make me sick, but I tried it anyway since nothing else was working.....Ive lost 40 lbs and I feel good about that...but ive not seen a nutrionalist, so im really confused about dumping and what I can and cant eat....

Hi Amanda! I have the exact surgical date as you! I am still doing pureed, and monday I begin to add solid food, one item at a time. It would be ideal for you to see a nutritionist, but in the mean-time; try to get 60gm protein, and 64 oz water in. everything else is nearly impossible to get in. We are trying for 800cal /day. I usually get 400 or so, so far. My nutritionist gave me ideas to get more calories, without bulk. Until you can get to a nutritionist, (I see mine monthly now) ask the Surgeon to outline what he expects of you. Even if it requires another appt. Your nutrition is the key to your health, and your best weight loss. Are you taking an adequate vitamin?

Hi, I had my surgery on April 5. the only times I get sick is if I eat too fast. I didn't understand this at first but practice makes perfect. I find that if I eat a bite. put my fork down and wait a few minutes before the next bite I can do fine. When out with family last week, ate 5 shrimp(not the breading part) and some green beans. was so full didn't even want the sf Icecream. I don't know if this is your problem or not but try something with little texture, but pause ( put fork down or you have a tendency to keep on eating) between bites. It worked for me. I hope this helps.

Hi, I'm with Denise...I had surgery the day after you and I've still been on puree and I'm just now starting to ween myself onto more solid food. Things I'm eating: Protien shakes and protien liquid, cottage cheese, Nautral applesauce, foil pouch salmon, refried beans, cheese, scrambled eggs, very ground beef, very shredded chicken (though lots of people can't tolerate chicken until way out...if ever). I also eat very cooked veggies in moderation. That's when I'm following my regiem...I've fallen off the wagon a few times. A friend of my had the same issue as you. It was suggested that she get pretty strict about puree only to give her stomach time to heal. Apparently the throwing up can my it swell. She is doing much better now. Hope this helps! Rachel PS...I've also tried tastes of my kids icecream...I don't dump on it either which really bummed me out. Now I have to be disiplined! Bananas make my stomach cramp though.

I'm with Trish. I get sick if I eat to fast. It was a real learning experience to learn to slow down. Putting your fork down does help. The first few weeks I actually had to concentrate on eating. When I took a bite, I would chew it to puree and then swallow. Then I would have to remind myself to wait to eat the next bite. It took some training but now eating slow is becoming habit. I still am working on it but it's getting better. I haven't even tried anything with sugar so I don't know how that would react with me. Can't help you there. Good luck! Diana

I can't eat more than a few bites of anything before I become so full and bloated I feel like I'm going to explode. I can't imagine being able to eat a whole anything. I can only eat 3 spoonfuls of soft serve vanilla ice cream. Oh I'm 8 weeks out as of tomorrow. At 5 & 6 weeks I was unable to keep food down and for some reason this week I've been able to tolerate it. Food still taste pretty nasty for the most part but.. I can keep it down now. I'm starting to finally get some energy.

Amanda, be real -- you know you shouldn't be eating sugar, whether you've seen a nutritionist or not. And a whole banana split??? THINK, GIRL! Did you really go through all this just to go back to your old eating habits? Try some cooked ground beef in spaghetti or marina sauce, cantalope or watermelon chunks, and protein shakes. You'll sabotage yourself if you don't get ahold of this....

your diarrhea is the dumping.. sugar isnt really supposed to make us throw up because it's 'dumping into the intestine too quickly' so it comes out the other end instead re: diarrhea. but i've dumped on "no added sugar" ice cream and the cramps where killer!! be glad you didnt go thru it, i was sick for well over an hour!! I agree with what another poster said about going back to liquids or pureed and doing that for a week or so, cant hurt to try anyway.. lots of luck!
