Urgent Help Needed With Protein Drinks
Hi All,
I am 2 weeks post-op and cannot tolerate the protein drinks. Before the surgery, and worse after the surgery, I had/have an intolerance to sweet tasting drinks. The Whey Protein sickens me, the Isopure (sweet) causes me to become nausiated, and all other options are "sweetened" artificially. I am extremely weak and need to try other protein drinks that are not that sweet to the taste. Can someone help me?

Hi Eunice, where did you have your surgery? Right now, I am eating Cream of Chicken Soup from Carb Options and put a scoop (17g) of Whey Protein in it. It is thick and has a funny taste, but I can get it down. We'll see what happens in an hour. It seems that I can only tolerate "salty" tastes, but it is the only change I might have at this point. Too much sodium vs. too little protein, I guess I would chose "too much salt" since I believe that the protein is more important right now. Donna. P.S. If you find anything out there that works for you, please let me know.
Hi Donna
I use the carb solutions protein mix. {chocolate} It's not sweet at all and I mix it with 8 oz. of skim milk which adds another 8g of protein to the 20 in the mix. I then add ice and blend it so I can eat it with a spoon. Takes me awhile to eat it so it gives my tummy time to take it all in. When I tried the already mixed can drinks of carb solutions they came right back up.........so for me I'll keep on making the mix myself. I hope this helps you.
God bless

Hi Donna- I wasn't able to stomach any of the protein drinks either. Even the so-called odorless ones made me gag. I spent a fortune buying samples and spent many trips to bathroom ing them up. I called my Doc and he told me to try Carb-Conscious Carnation Instant Breakfast Drink (you can buy it at any grocery store). It has 21 essential vitamins and minerals and zero sugar carbs added. When mixed with 1 cup of skim milk, it has 12 grams of protein. I tried the chocolate flavor and it tastes just like the Nestle chocolate milk I remember drinking as a kid. It tastes almost too good to be true......and it doesn't have that nasty protein odor or flavor. I know you are sensitive to sweet tastes right now, but this is more of a creamy chocolate milk taste. Since Sunday, I've started each morning with a Carnation chocolate shake, and it really gives me that boost I need to get going in the morning.
Carnation Instant Breakfast shakes only have about half the protein of the protein powdered shakes, but hey, they taste good and they go down smooth......and they don't come back up! I get the rest of my protein each day from eggs, creamed soups, tuna, cottage cheese, and soft cheeses. As you progress in your diet, you can begin to rely more on food for protein, than these dreaded protein shakes. Hope this helps!

I have tried many, many samples from the various websites like vitalady.com, bariatriceating.com & wlssupplies.com. I have probably tried twenty or so. I now know the ones I like and have ordered larger amounts of those. It was really helpful to me because even some that others raved about tasted gross to me (Nectar drinks, for instance, everyone seems to love them but I thought they smelled and tasted disgusting!)
So that is definitely what I would recommend. I know have 4 that I can actually say that I really like. I am drinking 2 a day and with my food averaging about 80-100g of protein a day. My weight loss has really picked up and I am feeling much stronger.
Good luck!

Last resort you might want to try Amino Acid Protein Liquid...it has 15g of protein per two tablespoons. I found it at the Health Food Store and the clerk said I could mix it with my water...it comes in cherry or orange flavored...sorta like flavored water. I haven't used it yet, but a friend has tried it straight for his work-outs and says it doesn't taste bad.
Good Luck,
