TOTALLY agree with you on the jello!  I don't care if I ever eat it again after the hospital!  Good luck!

I was on a full liquid diet for 5 days before surgery and and clear liquid diet the day before surgery. No colon cleanse as the liquids cleans you out. It is so your liver shrinks  up some.

Hi

I'm only 9 days out...
It on 5th day that I finally was able to get my full Protein & H2O requirement.

I use protein powder from Walmart...it comes in 26 or 52 grm per scoop dosages. Yes, the whey powder does get in my throat which caused painful coughs. So I tended to drink it over period of 2 hours with water in between.

On day 7, I started eating the Yoplait Light fat free vanilla vogurt over period of 1 hour.

I use the SF pudding to eat my precriptions.

Total Cal is under 600 and the protein is 67 g

I'm told the ice cream machine makes great frozen protein desserts...this may be a solution for you @ the drinks?

Hi
I have only 2 things to say:
1-DO what your doctor tells you!  I asked my doctor the same question...why isn't there a 'standard' protocol?  Her answer: WLS is not a science..it's an art...and each doctor has her/his own protocols.

2-You will drive yourself nuts trying to follow everybody else's protocol and compare it to what you are told by your doctor.  Trust your doctor's opinion and experience...she/he is the expert...mine has been doing the surgery for 10 years and the facility has done over 2000 surgeries...I figure they know more than I do LOL

Just my opinion of course...but it certainly is working for me ^_^

My dietian has made everyone that goes through St. Joseph of Orange do the 2 weeks before 2 weeks after of high protein shakes. She said it was to reduce the size of the liver, and to prepare you mentally for after the surgery. Our meal replacements are bought directly from the sugeons office but they're $300! I told her I couldn't afford that so she recommened Bariatric Advantage, so I bought those. I've been on them since Monday and I'm having a hard time and want to eat. It's not so much that I'm hungry but mentally I just wanna munch!

Thanks for this post.  I just really want to emphasize the deep breathing and coughing.  Those are SO important.  I came out of my surgery with a partially collapsed lung, but they didn't know it at the time.  I was held in recovery for TWELVE hours and my recovery nurse was not forcing me to take deep breaths (I was so out of it from the anesthesia.)  I ended up with pneumonia and I am still dealing with it, along with the lung.  It definitely makes recovery harder.  So, TAKE DEEP BREATHS, folks.  Make sure they are forcing you!!!

I had my DS on 3/10/09.  I am on protein shakes, water, soy milk, thinned down refried beans (I add a scoop of unflavored protein powder to 4 oz), and yogurt.  I tried some watered down oatmeal, but it just didn't sit right in my stomach.  I am trying for 30 g of protein a day right now, and shooting for 64 oz of liquid, which I have problems with.  I usually only end up with 50 oz or so, but I am trying.  Certainly don't want to go back in to the hospital for dehydration.

I really have to space everything out.  It's a pain.  It took me an hour and a half to get down 6 oz of yogurt today.  I'm constantly sipping on my water bottle.

Topic: full liquid diet b4 surgery?
I am just wondering what your surgeons required prior to surgery? Mine does have a pre-op suggested diet 2 wks b4 surgery it consists of alot of carn inst breakfast.. pudding, fruit, and a ight dinner of lean meats, but he told me i did not have to do the pre-op diet because i had already lost weight.  But now I am seeing alot of posts of people that are having surgery and are on full liquids 2 days prior to surgery and a colon cleanse.  My surgeon didnt have me do any of this.  The directions I got were to eat light the day before.. example: eggs and toast or ceral for breakfast. 3 oz tuna or turkey sandwich with 1/2 cup fruit.. snacks: sf pudding or jello and full liquids just for dinner.. soup and nothing after midnight... it just seems like alot to eat the day prior to surgery.  I think I am going to do the full liquid tomorrow.  I just wonder why surgeons have different ways of doing things and not just one set way.
