I had surgery on the 17th.  It's been a fairly rough couple of weeks, I had quite a bit of pain, at least as painful as my scheduled cesarean (although not as painful as my emergency cesarean) but that wasn't the worst part, the worst part is that I've been struggling with nausea since surgery.  It is getting better but it's not gone and getting in what I'm required to get in each day is impossible with the nausea.  I'm working hard on getting my protein shakes in but not getting nearly what I should at this point, did better my first few days home but now after almost two weeks of struggling with on and off nausea I'm not doing as well, so working hard on upping that.  I am still on full liquids but start pureed foods tomorrow, at two weeks out.  Then I am on pureed for two weeks and then move onto soft foods for two weeks before finally moving onto regular foods.  I haven't been hungry really since surgery, although have felt like I needed to eat something, hard to explain but it wasn't the same feeling as being hungry, lol.  Sounds like you are doing great, keep it up!

5 Days out!!

I also had surgery on March 25th and emotions were all over the place. I feel sometimes that I may not have been as emotionally ready as I anticipated when the day came. I remember being very ready up until one month before the big day. Then as the surgery day grew closer and closer, I got more and more confused.

I had to ignore all of the confusion because I wouldn't break the agreement that I had made with myself to have this surgery. I knew that I had done enough research and had made a calm, rational and informed decision over one year before. I knew that I couldn't listen to the last minute jitters.

Last night when trying to fall asleep it hit me . I have gone through years of trying to change. Lost 50lbs many times with different weight loss strategies and yet, none of those strategies forced my mind to really really try to change. I was always able to hit 'pause' or 'stop' on that program to give in to head hunger or emotional eating or whatever it was that kept me the size that I was.

Yes, with WLS, you can also hit pause and even eat your way back but not now. Not a week after surgery or 2 months after surgery. Not right away - no way. This tool forces you to change, at least initially. My mind is fighting it all the way. I'm having to learn new strategies for all of the head hunger. It's sad and depressing then it's happy and joyous. It's a roller coaster!

So congrats to us for taking this ride! I'm so so so glad that we have these message boards to help keep us sane, motivated and connected!

Again, I haven't hit my plateau yet so I can be oh so optimistic, but think of it this way:

There's no way in hell we're not going to lose weight if we are following our plans as best we can. I have a feeling we are going to have a lot of plateaus along the way and we all have to get out of the mentality we've had for all these years of "all or nothing." If we're doing the right things then logically the weight will come off.

And by the way, please feel free to quote me back to myself when I start my plateau cuz I know it's easy to be optimistic when you've lost 13lbs in the first week out of surgery! I have a feeling with that big of a weight loss I will definitely be one of the plateau-ers!

I take one Flinstone vitamin with Iron and 3 calcium chews with Vitamin D. They also want me to take benefiber but so far I've been pretty regular so I haven't done that. Maybe once I eat regular food I'll need more vitamins, but so far that's it for me.

2oz of food at a serving sounds great to me! Before it would be at least 2lbs! Haha

Robyn,
You are doing great. I am 4 weeks out. I am still eating a soft food diet. 2 ounces does the trick for me. Today I get to add a few more foods to my list that I can intake.

I too am so thirsty.
Gulping isn't good since it can stretch the pouch in the first few weeks/months.

I was told 1 oz every 15 minutes so it seemed like all I did the first 2 weeks was water "shooters" using the mini cups the hospital provided. I would hold the water in my mouth and slowly swallow portions.
When I let too much down, I could feel it "hit" so to speak.

Now I'm two weeks post operative & I can take about 2 oz at a time. I sit with my bottle water drinking constantly. The hardest think for me is to stop drinking for the 20 minutes before & after eating as required before meals.

You're doing great.
Remember- muscle weighs more than fat.
Your execise is fantastic and contributes to reshaping your body & soul. The scale isn't the only measurement so don't get too focused on the numbers.

The numbers ultimally follow when the body realizes you're not starving it. It's natural for scale plateu as early as 1 month. Just keep on task and it will break.

You are doing fantastic!  Keep up the good work!  I can't believe you didn't need pain meds - amazing!

I had my surgery on March 18, a few days before you.  I had pain for a couple of days, but am much much better now.  I spent 2 nights in the hospital. Like you, I have been walking, walking, walking.  I think that's best.  I've lost about 13 lbs since the day before surgery.  Right now, I'm on a liquid diet until I see my surgeon next Friday.  Pretty much 4 oz protein shakes every couple of hours.  I was told to get in at least 74 gm protein.  Other liquids I am having are cream of wheat, sf popsicles, and cream soups (mostly cream of chicken).  I can only get in about 4 oz at a time which is fine by me.  I can't beleive I have not had a morsel of food to eat in 11 days!  This really does work!

Didn't they put you on a post-op diet?  What is your vitamin regimen like?  I am on 2 multivitamins w/iron, 4 calcium citrate, and B12 daily.  Seems I am taking them all day long.

I am so glad I did this!  :o)
