I just started the protien diet today.  I am supposed to have 3 shakes and 3 bars a day.  I am not a happy camper right now.  I see the nut tomorrow and am going to ask about eating some veggies.  My surgery is not until the 24th!!!  Dawn

Topic: Open RNY (March 23rd) Anyone else

I am having my RNY open due to the multiple pelvic surgeries I have previously had. These surgeries have increased the chance of scar tissue thus ruling out a lap surgery.
My surgeon has done hundreds of these procedures and prefers to do an open, so I feel good about the choice we have made. I just wanted to have a shorter hospital stay and a shorter recovery time, but I want the safest surgery for me.
Good luck to anyone *****ads this and who is going to have surgery soon.

Stay strong Emily you can get through this. It may be tough for the first few days but remember that its all worth it and stay focused.

Hi Melinda,

I can tell you what I had to do, but your situation may be different.  All insurances are different on their requirements.  As of March 3rd it will be one year to the day that I started this process.  (you can read about it in my blog under my profile)

I had to have the following (some insurance required and some the surgeon required):

6 months supervised diet (by a PCP)
Sleep study
lots and lots of bloodwork
EGD scope
3 years of documented weigh-in (I got my GYN to give me those since she always weighs me)
nutritionist appointment
psych eval

I think that's everything.  I was approved by my insurance in 5 days.

All surgeons are also different in how they do this process.  Mine does not give a surgery date until you have insurance approval and all testing done.  I know others who got their surgery date before they even had insurance approval.  It's all up to the surgeon.

Best of luck to you!
