full liquid diet b4 surgery?
I am just wondering what your surgeons required prior to surgery? Mine does have a pre-op suggested diet 2 wks b4 surgery it consists of alot of carn inst breakfast.. pudding, fruit, and a ight dinner of lean meats, but he told me i did not have to do the pre-op diet because i had already lost weight. But now I am seeing alot of posts of people that are having surgery and are on full liquids 2 days prior to surgery and a colon cleanse. My surgeon didnt have me do any of this. The directions I got were to eat light the day before.. example: eggs and toast or ceral for breakfast. 3 oz tuna or turkey sandwich with 1/2 cup fruit.. snacks: sf pudding or jello and full liquids just for dinner.. soup and nothing after midnight... it just seems like alot to eat the day prior to surgery. I think I am going to do the full liquid tomorrow. I just wonder why surgeons have different ways of doing things and not just one set way.
My dietian has made everyone that goes through St. Joseph of Orange do the 2 weeks before 2 weeks after of high protein shakes. She said it was to reduce the size of the liver, and to prepare you mentally for after the surgery. Our meal replacements are bought directly from the sugeons office but they're $300! I told her I couldn't afford that so she recommened Bariatric Advantage, so I bought those. I've been on them since Monday and I'm having a hard time and want to eat. It's not so much that I'm hungry but mentally I just wanna munch!

Hi
I have only 2 things to say:
1-DO what your doctor tells you! I asked my doctor the same question...why isn't there a 'standard' protocol? Her answer: WLS is not a science..it's an art...and each doctor has her/his own protocols.
2-You will drive yourself nuts trying to follow everybody else's protocol and compare it to what you are told by your doctor. Trust your doctor's opinion and experience...she/he is the expert...mine has been doing the surgery for 10 years and the facility has done over 2000 surgeries...I figure they know more than I do LOL
Just my opinion of course...but it certainly is working for me ^_^

I had to do 3 protein shakes per day and 1 small meal (like a lean cuisine or weigh****chers frozen meal) per day for two weeks before the surgery. Today (which is the day before) I am on all liquids. I assume that's to get out anything in the stomach or intestines before surgery tomorrow. My doctor did not stress out that I have to do the liquid diet or else, so I did the best that I could. I have lost about 10lbs and I'm sure that came from my liver so I think I'm in good shape. I think that each doctor is different and your weight may also play a factor in it. I am definitely obese, but under 300lbs. I'm sure that my liver is fatty but might not be as fatty as, say someone who is 500lbs. So I think that might have something to do with it, but am just guessing. Good luck with everything and just read a lot of these posts. You'll see that everyone is doing something different so don't worry!
