Topic: RE: 9 month out update: Triathlon training
I have been thinking about a tri-ath too. I've never been an athletic person but I thought it would be the perfect event for me. I tend to get bored doing the same thing for too long - so switching from swimming to biking to running would be ideal. I haven't even started to train - not sure what to do and until lately haven't had the time to train. We've had some really bad weather in KS and the kids and I have been passing a cold back and forth so it's been hard to start. Any suggestions? Amie

Topic: RE: 9-Month Follow-up with Surgeon
Hi Wendy, Congrats on your success. I too am having problems with my V-D. I am now up to 1600 IU. My surgeon wanted me to be in the sun for 15 min a day but I have a history of skin cancer so I told him that short sleeves and no sunscreen is a no no. So I will continue with the pills. On another note. My blood pressure is dropping and if it continues I can get off of the BP meds. Happy Holiday's Yordis

Topic: 9 month out update: Triathlon training
Hey Everyone-- Been off the boards lately as I've been ramping up my training for a triathlon. This past week I was 9 months out from surgery, and so I decided to do a self-run Novice triathlon. This is 300m swim (12 laps), followed by a 5mi bike, followed by a 1.25mi run. I focused on finishing, and was able to move from one event to the next without any stopping. This was a huge accomplishment for me, and is something I would have never even considered possible 9 months ago. I'm not at the level of winning any competitions, but I am doing great. As I continue training, I'm seriously ramping up. The night before last I swam 1000m without stoping (40 laps). I still have alot of work to do on speed and endurance on the other two events, especially running. Today I'm weighing in at about 195. My highest was 350, lowest 188, and date of surgery 322. Not bad for somebody 6'4". Anyone is welcome to join me in tri-ath training!! You start out small and work your way up. It's been a great way to help me get refocused on structured exercise. -Dave

It's OK to count your calories. Everybody's body is different, and caloric intake should change as you are ramping up or down your physical activity, and depending on whether you are trying to lose, maintain, or just build muscle mass. It's not just what you're eating, but also how it's spread throughout the day and what activities you're doing! Merry Christmas!! --Dave

HUGE Milestone.... I was so excited when I passed that HUGE milestone... Likely your exercise levels are making the BMI charts be off scale (people with higher muscle mass have higher BMI #'s) Merry Christmas!! --Dave

Keep up the great work. If I could give you any advice it would be this: fill your holiday season with giving to those who are less fortunate than you, and you will have the biggest emotional pick up of your life! Merry Christmas!! --Dave

Topic: RE: Humiliated by Before Pictures??
Some before pictures are so much more humiliating than others. My wife is definately more sensitive about her before pictures than I am. I just came across a picture taken at a wedding one year before my surgery, and the change in my appearance was so dramatic that people who don't know me well might have a hard time picking me out of a line-up. That said, when I was heavy I didn't hide in a box...I didn't live in shame... There should be no reason to hide from your old self now either. Let it give you a sense of accomplishment in how far you've come!
