Soft Food Ideas Needed
I need help with ideas for high protein soft foods besides the basics. I especially need ideas for breakfasts. My program has me on soft foods for 3 weeks starting tomorrow, and I don't want to get bored as I often do. Suggestions for good protein foods to eat when out would also be helpful. Thanks everyone!

Hey Sherry,
Every surgeon has a different food plan in mind for his or her patients post-op. Were you given a list of foods to adhere to? Or were you left to your own devices? Perhaps if you gave us an idea of what your "basics" were, we can make some better recommendations?
After I was a week out, I was also put on a soft protein diet that consisted of the following:
Cottage Cheese: low-fat/nonfat (7 grams protein / 1/4 cup)
Cheese: low-fat/nonfat or any reduced fat cheese, hard or soft, no cream cheese (7 grams protein / ounce)
Yogurt: low-sugar/low-fat any yogurt that is under 100 calories, any flavor, but cannot contain chunks of fruit (5-12 grams protein / 6 ounces)
Eggs: Prepared any way - do not use butter for cooking (6 grams protein / egg)
Moist Chicken/Turkey (without skin): Any form, not fried. (7 grams protein / ounce)
Fish/Seafood: Any type - do not start with clams or oysters as they are too chewy (7 grams protein / ounce)
Beans: refried, kidney, black, edamame, etc. cooked without fat. no baked beans or green beans. (3 grams protein / 1/4 cup)
Tofu (not fried) / Soy "meatless" products: (5.5 grams protein / ounce)
Light mayo / miracle whip, soy sauce, dried herbs / spices, oils such as olive, canola, and peanut oil.
I ate lots of shrimp and salmon, both dusted with garlic powder and dried parsley. Yogurt for breakfast. Egg and a slice of cheese for breakfast. Low sodium turkey and chicken (boarshead) deli slices and cottage cheese, or regular cheese, for lunch (i sometimes made rollups with them). Tuna salad, egg salad, chicken salad. Edamame, garbanzo beans. Refried beans with melted cheese over them.
Good luck - the soft protein diet is tricky, but it's over relatively soon!

OK. Yes, i do have a specific list of foods, but there isn't too much beyond the cheeses, eggs, canned meats and lean deli meats on the list which are the basics probably on most post-op lists. I was just trying to find something besides eggs for breakfast. There isn't enough protein in oatmeal or yogurt to do those without adding protein powder, so I wanted to see if there were soft cereal bars or something on people's lists that work ok for them and are higher in protein.

I tolerated eggs very well, and yes, everyone is different...this is what I've tolerated. scrambled very soft egg w cheese, deviled egg (yum yum) cottage cheese, my snack wud be a slice of low fat cheese. Just be real careful what you eat because 3 days out I ate a low fat carb bar by breyers made w splenda, I did'nt read into it enough and there were other sweetners in it that made me HAVE DUMPING SYNDROME ...You defintiley do not want to experience that. Congrats and God Bless.
Jodell and I have both gotten to where we really like refried beans. I am a fan of Rosarita jalepeno flavored refried beans, and I melt some cheese on top. It is quick and easy, and it is amazing how far a single can goes on portion sizes. Other items I like are shrimp (with kraft ****tail sauce in a squeeze bottle), Triscuits (about 3-4), and spoon size shreaded wheat. We have found crystal light to be very helpful in getting in our liquids. I too have some problems with breakfast, so sometimes I'll eat another meal at breakfast time!! (gotta be a rebel). We also have been note to eat applesauce in the morning. Make sure to chew your food well!
