Surgery on 3/13 and feeling AWFUL

Hey - I had my surgery on 3/13 and nothing is going the way I expected. I have thrown up about 7 times and have been back to the hospital twice. My last vomiting episode left a horrible taste in my mouth and my urine has the same weird smell. I also ran a fever last night (99.6 to 101.6 under the armpit). My doctor is out of town and his on call person said maybe this is just normal for me. (Well, not the fever - he does not know about that.) I will call my doc when he gets back on Monday and see what the deal is. I have not been able to eat my protein shakes/vitamins. I tried on Friday, and then put myself back on clear liquids until I can talk to my doctor. UGh. This is not what I expected.

My doc had me on clear liquids *only* for a week postop (and 2 weeks preop too). My surgeon actually forbid the protein drinks for the first week, so that your tummy doesn't get nauseated I suspect if you tried that it might help. It can't hurt. As for the vomiting, are you on some kind of stomach acid reducer? I'm on Prevacid Solutabs. Not vomiting blood I hope? Ok, the taste in your mouth is inevitiable, fewer meals mean less "brushing" of the teeth with solids. It's also probably related to the vomiting, so if you can get that under control it might help (ie need to brush frequently to get rid of it). The urine is going to smell stronger for a while, till you get your fluids back up, that's because you are probably in early dehydration... make sure you get your water, and clears and don't stress over protein yet... Keep in touch.... OH and the fever could also be a sign of dehydration. I would stick to clears, get your water in, and see how you feel in the morning... then if not better, make a Dr's appointment.

I'm feeling a little better this afternoon. But I noticed my "symptoms" are starting up again - my mouth produces lots of bile, my throat feels closed off and my back starts to hurt. I tend to throw up some time after that. I just took another dose of my Reglan (for naseua and vomiting) to see if that will stop the inevitable.

IMO you might talk to your doc about something like Prevacid Solutabs... works better and Reglan has a side effect of depression (not something we need to face when we're already so overwhelmed).

Well, I would suggest maybe going to the emergency room at the hospital where you had the surgery especially if you start vomiting blood. How much are you drinking? It should be 1 ounce every 15 minutes. My surgeon also limits us to sugar free clear liquid plus broth, sf kool aid, sf diet snapple, sf tang,sf popsicles and sf jello for the first week after surgery. If you drink more then your stomache just can hold then you will vomit from overfilling it. If you are vomiting frequently, you probably are not getting enough fluids and could end up becoming dehydrated. Definately call your surgeon first thing in the morning if you don't go get checked out. Take care of yourself. Sherry

Im so sorry to hear you are feeling so bad. I had surgery March 5. Iam doing great! I did or should I say I have experienced the awful pain on the shoulder and chest. I couldnt drink any liquids I had to freeze everything! Just a couple a days ago I was able to drink the water. Of coarse I drank to much and hurt my chest. The Dr. Told me itwas because of the tube they inserted. My Dr. Has us on liquids for two weeks then we start to introduce the puree foods. And remember its all but sipping now. Theres no gulps or big drinks. Its not very much we can fill our pouches with. So if you are drinking or eatting to much it will come rightout. Or drinking it to fast. About your urine got to get the water in. I ve drank crystal light and have noticed that my urine is very yellow and also has an awful smell so I just keep with the water its clear. Just make sure u do call your Dr. Hope you get better very soon. Love mia

How are you this morning hon, still vomiting? If yes, I'd say call the surgeon.... no blood I hope... Sherry's right, any blood at all and you NEED to get to an ER. Keep us posted when you get home.

I am sorry to hear that you are not feeling well. Please stay on top of the doctors. I have to tell you that Kat is right. I use the Prevacid solutabs now and I am pre-op and it works wonders. Make sure you go to the ER if you have any systoms. Remember that fever is your bodies way of dealing with infection so the ER may not be a bad idea in the event that you need some iv antibiotics as well as iv fluids if you are not getting enough. I hope things get better for you.
