Surgery Tuesday - On Sugar Free Liquids Now
Hi all! Well, surgery for me is Tuesday afternoon, and I have started the 3 day clear liquid diet. My appointment with the surgeon o Thursday went fine, and I decided to do the gastric bypass instead of the lap band. I think it is best for me not having to do so much follow up and being able to lose weight more quickly due to knee and hip problems. I am praying that I can make it through the weekend ok and that my surgery goes well. I am really nervous about complications, but my surgeon feels confident that it's not likely. Hopefully he's having a good day on Tuesday!
Check in everyone with surgery next week so we can support each other!

I'm 11 days out now from RNY and I wish you healing as well as I have!
I was begging to get up and walk the same day of my surgery (nurses were content to let me just sit in bed)... but I know that's not the best for lungs soooo I got up and walked to the scales ..... WARNING - you will gain fluid during surgery and gain as much as 10 lbs! DON"T get discouraged, it's normal.
Anyway, I was dischargd 48 hrs after my RNY started. I went shopping in the mall the same day I'm about 3 days ahead of my nutritionists "ideal schedule" for tolerating meals, never once threw up.... and only once got dumping because *I* was an idiot. Got the 'low blood sugar, gonna fall asleep' type.
Day 6, I wanted to chew... I decided on crackers, supposed to be on full liquids but I convinced myself that in water they become mush so I could do it.... HOWEVER I did NOT stop to think that saltines were a better choice than "Cheez It" crackers.... I ate only 5 crackers, but the high volume of fat in them made me dump... SOOO yaaaay I know I can dump now... and I won't do it again
Anyway, no vomiting (not once)... pain was well controlled with the liquid vicodin until I stopped needing it around day 8 (yah I'm a wuss). Now I don't use anything for pain, can tolerate 15 minutes a day of sustained walking (despite my knees and back)... and I'm ready to celebrate... the best news of all??
I was 345 lbs before my preop liquid diet (2 weeks) and as of today I'm 313lbs!! Need to update my tickerfactory
Thank you Kat! I needed that motivation and inspiration! I hope it does go that well for me. I am just struggling to get through the day today with the liquid diet. I thought 3 days was a long time, so I don't know how you did two weeks. WOW!!! I had a tough time this afternoon but had some hot and sour soup broth for dinner and feel better now. I wish I could have the rest of the chinesse we got, but I was good. My husband does have to wor****il mid-afternoon Sunday, so it will be just me and the kids. I hope they don't drive me nuts! I got some easy meals to make them so i don't have to labor over any food prep during thwe stages when I can't eat.
Anyway, thanks again and keep in touch!

Hoodia from Wal Mart helped with the appetite control, as did gallons of Wonton Soup broth and Hot & Sour soup broth ALSO... Wal mart has a garlic & herb flavored chicken boullion cube... it works wonders!! And when you can tolerate it thicker, mashed potato flakes help make it a nice "cream soup" too.
Good Luck
BTW I lost 16 lbs in the 2 weeks liquids, sooo you do have something to look for
And I have something to be thankful for too, I finally met a doc that requires a LONGER liquid diet than mine... Dr. Orodyne in Louisiana requires 6 weeks liquids!!
my surgery is on the 29th, but the doctor didn't say anythign about liquids yet. I have my pre op appointment with him on the 21st which is just over a week before. I would imagine he would put me on liquids then. Go****ried to do it today but that is some tough stuff. I had my very first Isopure this morning. Actually not too bad. But by lunch I had crashed and got some real food. But I am trying to stay off the carbs and just do protein.
Is it a standard to be on liquids at least a week before?
btw, Sherry, I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers tomorrow.
Thank you for the thoughts. Yes, they will put you on a 1-3 day liquid diet before surgery to clean out your pipes and get you rolling towards weight loss. The liquid diet will help burn off fat around your organs and make it easier to perform the surgery, so you have to be good with the diet in order to make the surgery easier for the surgeon. It's a rewards to me.
The diet is very hard, so you probably can't stick to it until you have to. I would probably never do it again unless I had to. I guess that unless you are drinking all of the time, you will be hungry at least some. Today I took a nap in the afternoon so that I wouldn't have to deal with the hunger and feeling icky, and that seemed to help. I also know that it will be hard to sleep in the hospital, so I want to rest some before going in.
Thank you and good luck with your appointment and surgery next week. Hope all goes well!
