PRE OP DIET
Hi Rita,
My nutriontionalist insisted on the diet. But she also mentioned that if I wanted to go out for that last big steak meal or a dozen crabs (I am from Baltimore Hon), then go ahead and don't worry about it.
Here is the diet she has pre-ops follow. It generally mimics what you would be able to eat about a year out. The only difference is I have been increasing the portions or protein and adding a protein shake (to help with healing after the surgery).

Hope that helps.

Thanks for posting that website. That is great.
But now you have me thinking about crabs!!! I have family in Baltimore. We get a bushel whenever we get together!
I am just over a week out and will be switching to clear liquids on Saturday. right now I am having 2 protein drinks a day and dinner of lean protein and non starch veggies and clear liquids.
We are not required to lose any weight or have any kind of special diet pre-op. The only thing is to not eat or drink anything after midnight the day before surgery...but that's most surgeries. I am glad I wasn't required to lose weight before surgery...if I could do it on my own then I wouldn't need the surgery. I would have tried really hard...but it would have been very stressful. The surgery is like a forced voluntary food addiciton intervention for me at least. I could do my own diet program for awhile...but 20 lbs is alot to lose before they let you have surgery. ~Christal/dionysus_star
Rita!
My surgery is 3/15 and my Dr. pushes the pre-op diet in order to shrink your liver by depleting your glycogen levels in your liver. This makes laproscopic surgery easier (according to him).
For 10 days I can have 3 servings of cottage cheese, veggies with no butter or oils on them, fruit, diet sodas, broth and sugar free popsicles.
I'm on day 4 and I won't lie, it is difficult... but it has made me see the light about changing my eating habits. Right now I would be satisfied if I could have a bite of a hamburger - not the whole darn thing...
If you have access to a fax I could fax over the diet that he gave me - it's a little more detailed...
Amie
My doctor required a 10 day pre op diet consisting of protein shakes, clear liquids, sugar free jello, sugar free pudding, and low fat cottage cheese (no more than three dairy servings a day). I had my surgery on Feb. 27th and really felt like it helped me prepare for what was to come. Good luck!
