Barbara, I agree with all that you have posted. We have three cats and a number of fi****'s amazing how relaxing it is to watch the fish. The cats enjoy it also. The cats also keep us active as one or the other is always wanting to go in or out all day and day long. I'm off to take my vitamins and then my first walk of the day. Thanks for the reminders. Oh I need to check my lottery ticket too. Have a great day, Rick

Funny - I copied it from another board.... Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true? A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it.. Don't waste them on exercise . Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap. Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables? A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio? A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc. Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program? A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good! Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you? A: You're not listening....Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you? Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle? A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach. Q: Is chocolate bad for me? A: Are you crazy? HELLO Cocoa beans! Another vegetable. It's the best feel-good food around!! Q: Is swimming good for your figure? A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me. Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle? A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape! Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets. And remember: "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - - chocolate in one hand - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming, "WOO HOO, What a Ride

Instead of a kitten...how about a semi-well-behaved pug!!!! John would probably jump onto the roof at the thought of giving up one of the pugs - from joy! Well maybe not really - he loves them - he just doesn't want to say he does! I don't mind living to 100 - especially if I win the powerball between now and then!

I already have three cats. But, I'm going to tell Pete and you told me I needed a cat to ward off depression! I love to tease him about getting another one. Three is really plenty, but it's great fun to see him go through the roof at the thought of another kitty. I'm not sure I really want to live to be 100 years old. I am, however, extremely grateful that WLS has made it possible for me to live longer than I would have. And, those years will be healthy, active, fun years. Have a great day. Tomorrow is Friday! Hugs, Stephanie

People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily.....Zig Ziglar So here is a little daily motivation!!!! Late-Breaking Health News... 1. Taking three or four short, brisk walks through the day can lower blood pressure...for people with pre-hypertension the same amount as does taking one 40-minute walk. A study, published in the Journal of Hypertension, found people with prehypertension who walked on a treadmill continuously for 40 minutes, and those who walked four times for 10 minutes over the course of 3.5 hours, both experienced a drop of systolic blood pressure of 5.4 to 5.6 mm Hg and distolic blood pressure of 3.2 mm Hg. A reduction of 5 mm Hg in systolic blood pressure has been reported to substantially reduce mortality and reduce the incidence of stroke and coronary heart disease. 2. People who live past 100 keep up with the latest trends and lead healthy lifestyles. Evercare, a health insurance plan that specializes in older people, polled 100 people 100 years of age or older about their secrets of successful aging. Their responses included keeping up with current events, having healthy habits, and holding spirituality in high regard. They avoided smoking, exercised regularly, kept active and ate a balanced diet. 3. Owing a pet can ward off depression, lower blood pressure, boost immunity and reduce the risk for allergies. According to a study published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, if a dog lived in the home, 19 percent of infants had pet allergies, compared with 33 percent among those who don't have pets. Children with dogs also had higher levels of some immune chemicals - a sign of stronger immune system activation. In another study, stockbrokers with high blood pressure who adopted a cat or dog had lower blood pressure readings in stressful situations than did brokers without pets. Finally, according to several other studies, heart attack patients who have pets also survive longer than those with no pets. So in conclusion....take 3 or 4 short brisk walks during the day if you are not doing any other type of exercise...don't smoke - keep active - eat balanced diets and lastly GET A DOG or CAT!!!! So some of these things are things we should be doing as WLS patients....you know the other rules for today...drink your water, take your vitamins, get your exercise and eat protein first. Let's all be posting here on this forum until we are 100! Unfortunately I will be leaving before alot of you because I will get to 100 way before most of you because I am one of the oldest MARCHers! Thank goodness we have a good chance of getting to 100 because of WLS!!!! Hugs to all...Barbara

My mind could definitely use some fun games! My husband and I love to play cribbage. I tried to learn bridge once but it's very complicated and I didn't play enough to really understand it. Backgammon is fun too. Once my classes are complete, I plan to learn to knit. I can knit one stitch but that's about it! I've also always wanted to teach English as a second language. I think it would be very rewarding. I think the trick is finding that elusive balance in life. Family, work, and play seem to all fight for attention. I read this great article by someone at Harvard about balancing all of the committments we have. We Americans like to cram as much as we can into the day. Even children don't have as much leisure time anymore. I'd like to find a way to balance everything and be healthy! Thanks for your inspiration! I'm going to make time for a few cribbage games with hubby this weekend. It will be good for us to spend some time together just relaxing! Have a great day! Hugs, Stephanie

Barbara, Those are some great ideas. Years ago I used to square dance. It may sound a little corny, but it was great exercise. It was also good clean fun and it was a very social thing to do. I would like to get back into that again, but it can be a pain in the keaster working shift work. My shifts change every two months so it is hard to take a class or join a club. Maybe with my new promotion I can work something out, but I don't know yet. Have a great day, Rick

" Anyone can live without motivation, but you live your best when you are inspired."...Allen Steble We don't want you to live without motivation, so we try to give you a little each day. Truly when you are inspired you will do your best and perhaps we can help a bit with your inspiration! Today my subject is a little off...but necessary perhaps for all of us...MUSCLE UP WITH MIND GAMES.... We all try to inspire to exercise and get some fitness, but we are thinking for our bodies. What about our thinking caps? Across the country, adults are doing exercises designed to firm up their mental muscles in the same way push-ups or jumping jacks result in better physical condition. People's brains don't necessarily deteriorate with age as scientist once believed. New research is showing that the more mentally active people are, the better their brains seem to work. Here are some suggestions to help you get into the mind game and some will definintely help your body as well: 1. take up chess, cribbage, backgammon or bridge 2. enroll in a course in Greek, Chinese, or Portuguese 3. learn to play the piano or write a short story 4. sign up for ballroom dancing or tai chi 5. study oil painting or metal sculpting 6. volunteer to teach English to immigrants 7. prepare a dish you've never made before Do you see a pattern in each of these mind games? They all require physical activity in addition to brain activity. Just think - signing up for ballroom dancing or tai chi helps not only your brain - but your physical body also. So in closing...exercise - not only your body, but your brain also! In addition - today - take your vitamins, drink your water and make protein your first food choice. Sharpen up those minds and bodies MARCHers! Hugs to all...Barbara
