Are you more confident as a slimmer person?

Because society looks at us differently now that we are smaller, do you have more confidence then you used to have? Is this confidence a result of how you feel about yourself or how you project that more positive feeling? I wish I had a stronger feeling of confidence then I do. I no longer want to hide in the shadows of life. Sometime soon I will be interviewed for a supervisor position. I think I am more confident going into this process then I would have been a few years ago. I had to buy new clothes for an interview and I actually had choices of clothes to buy. That is a huge deal for me. I can buy clothes in a regular store. I know all of you know what a great feeling that is. Life in general is easier as a smaller person. Do you agree? My question today is what have you done recently that you either wouldn't have been able to do two years ago or that you didn't have courage to do two years ago? Life is great, Rick

Well Rick, I did do something about 3 months ago that perhaps I wouldn't have done 2 years ago. As you all know I work for the state of MA as a program specialist with the Division of Unemployment Insurance. Recently a position became available with the Federal Department of Labor. I applied for this position. I have 37 years experience with unemployment insurance - 30 years in TN, 1 year working in NH after I moved here and 6 years with MA. I have thorough knowledge of my subject matter as I have worked in it for so many years. This position with the federal government meant I would use that experience but in addition I would be responsible for a couple of states in New England which would mean travelling and meeting with their top line directors/commissioners, etc. 2 years ago I would not have felt comfortable meeting with these "high up" execs. Now I am still a little in awe of these folks - they are the leaders of their unemployment agencies. Anyway, I applied for the job. There were over 50 people that applied. They narrowed the field down to 15 they interviewed. I was in the 15. The first interview was with the supervisor of the unit and his supervisor. If you passed that interview you went on to be interviewed by the staff of 10. The staff had to approve you because they all work so closely together as a team and they wanted a team member. I was one of 3 of the 15 that got invited back for the 2nd interview with the staff. Guess what????? I start my new job Oct 29!!!! I did it...I passed the mustard...they wanted me! Is it because I am more confident? I do think that has something to do with it, but I also know I bring alot of knowledge to the position and I think that helped some also. But I will be 57 years old in a couple of weeks and I am changing careers yet again - for the 4th time in my life. I am confident I can do it, I look forward to my new responsibilities and I think much of it can be attributed to my new attitude towards myself with this weight loss. So I guess that courage factor is a little different than 2 years ago!!!! You sure have had some great thought provoking posts my friend! So Rick I know you will do great with interviewing for the new position. Just show up and I think because you are Rick they will consider themselves lucky to have you. Go for it and let us know how it goes. Barbara

Barbara, I am so impressed and proud of you. You saw an opportunity and have gone for it. They are SO lucky to have you. You will be bringing your knowledge and expierence to your new position. You will be one of the big wigs. I hope this means your commute will be less, however traveling for your new position will be more, but maybe on company time. This is so exciting for you. Please don't forget the rest of us "little" people. Thank you for your best wishes on my upcoming interview. Have a great day, Rick

Good Luck on your interview Rick! We can talk for hours about buying new clothes at regular stores (you know my shopping addictions ) I can say my confidence levels at work have gone way up. I remember being pre-op, dealing with a big meeting full of politicians at work and feeling the eyes of skinny assistants look at me as I walked by, being so uncomfortable doing anything but sitting behind my desk. I'll never forget a day before a meeting when I was going back and forth between rooms, I was sweating, out of breath and uncomfortable with how I looked (at that point I had started taking my pre-op pictures and could clearly see I was a ball above the waist situated on 2 stick legs).. My bosses assistant looked at me a few times and I could see what she was thinking.. That was the most uncomfortable moment I've ever had at work. Now I hold my head high when these meetings start, I'm not embarassed to walk into the meeting or to talk with people I wouldn't have in the past. Its a good feeling getting to the top of the stairs and not being out of breath or taking the stairs to the second floor and getting there before the people that took the elevator.
