We spent a week with my family in Texas who hasn't seen me since before surgery.
I got lots of big reactions. One person CRIED! Others didn't recognize me. My family asked me not to lose any more weight (of course) even though I am still far from my doctor's goal.
I kept being called skinny and people in my hometown (a very small town) who hadn't seen me in a while kept calling me by my younger sister's name. They thought I was her. SHE'S 23 YEARS OLD (I'm 32)!!!! If that doesn't make you feel good, nothing will.
I've found that there are a couple of disadvantages to being the skinniest one in your family though. I'd never been the skinny one, so I had no idea.
1. YOU get to be the one to climb in to through the window when someone loses the key to their house.
2. YOU get to be the one to climb into the third row seat to buckle the kids into their car seats/ booster seats because noone else can do it comfortably.
3. YOU get to be the one that sits at that extra chair they stick at the end of the table in restaurants when there is a large party.
4. YOU also get to be the one that sits in the chair in the tiny space in the corner at a restaurant where most people would be crowded.
and
5. How flat your a$$ has become and how small your boobs are is an open topic for discussion in almost any group of adults having a conversation. LOL!
Over all it was a very pleasant experience. Not really any negative comments...at least nothing that I didn't chalk up to ignorance. The general consensus was that I looked healthy and younger. My aunt said I looked like I did when I was a "little girl." Family members kept staring at me and saying how much I had changed. They were amazed. I think they expected me to look sick or unhealthy. That shows you what the uneducated public thinks about GB surgery.
Hope everyone else had a great holiday!

glad you made it home safely. you list was very funny. I can releate to number 5 in so many ways. one of my friends told me my butt was flat then I had to remnd him that I never really had a butt and he said oh yeah now you can really tell you do not have a butt. I was like o.k. thanks .

Kathy, welcome home and yee-haw! I grew up in Texas and will be going back for the first time in 10 years at the end of March.
One of the comments I hear most often from people who know I had surgery but haven't seen me in a while is the "but you look so healthy" comment. I wonder why people think we won't look healthy?! I'm glad everyone fawned over you and told you how wonderful you look. They are so right! You do look absolutely amazing!
Happy New Year!

You are so funny, Kathy! It's weird to be the one that can fit in the tiny space of the booth where most people cannot fit. I'm loving it!!! The office where I work holds weekly conversations about how well I "tack my floppy boobs up"--it's gotten quite comical. I hope they hold a fund raiser to help pay for my plastic sugery when it's time! Tee hee hee!
Welcome back--Hope you have a Happy New Year!
