Kirsten - if you are taking in that much protein - how are you doing it? I too would be interested in your info - my email is [email protected]. If you can send it today (Friday), I am going for my 3-month check up today and will take it with me and ask about it. My nutritionist (I just can't call them a nut!) is of the 70-80 grams of protein a day and would prefer you try to get it in with food. I do a protein shake a day for 20 grams and do manage to get the rest in, but sometimes it is difficult. 4 oz of meat is 28 grams of protein - so if you get in 8 oz of meat a day that is 56 plus my 20 from the shake gives me at least 78 (maybe more depending on what my breakfast choices are), but I have trouble eating more than that when the nutritionist also wants me to add in some fruit and veggies.....poor Mr. Pouch just can't take in any more food! Thanks, Barbara

Barbara - i get in 100-130 grams a day - I do 3-4 protien shakes at 20 each and then have literally one oz portions of meat, half an egg, 1 oz of cheese at the time - I can not eat 4 oz of meat!! this morning I had half a slice of 7 grain bread with 1 oz of pork loin cut up on it and had to make 2 meals 45 mins apart of that. I know the standard OH answer is do what your doc /nut says but I like to add please use the good sence the Lord gave you too. if you can not eat enough protien with out shakes USE protien shakes!! with out protien shakes I might make 50 grams a day maybe!! and that on a good day. I eat beef jerkey for snacks, the soy crisps, cheese, yogurt and cottage cheese - even eating every few hours there is no way I could hit my personal goal of 120 a day with out my protien shakes. do please share your docs reaction to the info danni ENJOY THE JOURNEY

Kirsten, could you please send the information on to me at [email protected] I am interested in seeing what it says also my support group meeting is this coming Tuesday and I would like to read up on it before asking my surgeon what he thinks...he told me 60 grams of protein per day minimum so if I get that I am happy...lol Jannine Start-357/Current-264/Goal-190

Kirsten, I'm very interested in your information also. Please send it to [email protected] My surgeon suggested 60-70 gm to start out with but by years end, I should be up to 100-120 gm a day. He realizes it takes time to work your way to that level. Thanks in advance! Sandy

Kristen- Does your info say anything about the different TYPES of protein? Like, which ones are best for us to get in? There was a message on the Main messageboard last week saying that only whey protein is beneficial to us, and that many are getting in another kind (can't remember the name, its scientific maybe it was "hydrolysate w/ L-Tryptophan"?) The guy saying "whey protein is best" was a representative from Unjury protein company, so he was a bit biased, not sure if its true... I wouldn't mind a copy of your info, too My email is [email protected] Rebecca 269/209/150

Kirsten, I just finished, saving, printing and more importantly, READING this information and it is very, VERY important stuff!!! I just want to stress to everyone that has responded to your post, that we, as gastric bypass (specifically RNY) patients, can never, ever have TOO MUCH protein!! I guarantee that each and every one of you that said your surgeon only said 40-60 grams a day or whatever, was stated as a MINIMUM. Go ahead and flame me, but I stress, that is a MINIMUM. We are special in the way we absorb, or more importantly, MALABSORB and this info spells it out. I have to admit, this information was a genuine eye opener for me. I'm ashamed to say that I have been very lackadaisical about my nutrition and protein intake until reading your information. My nutritionist and surgeon hit on these issues but seeing it in black and white, spelled out was truly more helpful for me. Thank you Kirsten!!! Sandy
