Because we're headed into our third month it is vitally important to take in 120 gms of protein per day, to maintain muscle mass, aid in weightloss, and maintain absoprtion of this necessary nutrient. If you figure our bodies absorb at a rate of 50% taking in 60 gms per day only absorbs at 30. I have some information on the topic of protein and absorption if you're interested please email me at [email protected] and I will send it to you via attachment. It is a lot of info, but valuable. It was provided to me by a fellow gastric bypass patient who has gone on to head up a support group for WLS patients. Kirsten

Gonna disagree here..... Everyone should follow what their surgeon states should be the protein intake. There is no way to tell how much a person absorbs or doesn't absorb. According to my nutritionist and surgeons plan 120g of protein daily is far too much. Everyone should do as their surgeon requests. If your surgeon says 120g, then do it. Mine states 60-80g, so thats what I will do

I have to agree with you. My doctor told me 75gm and so did my NUT. I am going stick with what he says because I struggle to get in that many. I am not going to go through this process feeling like a failure for not being able to get in 120.

"There is no way to tell how much a person absorbs or doesn't absorb." This isn't incredibly accurate. A person going into malabsorption or malnutrition will start showing clinical signs. These are outlined in the information I have, and I'm sure your nut and surgeon can fill you in as well. I will agree it is good to follow their advice. You're very lucky you have a great team working with you. As a person who likes to educate herself beyond what others may have to offer me I seek out information. I also like to share it when others might feel they need. I am not lucky enough to have a good team of nuts and surgeons at my disposal--complicated. I will say my surgeon is excellent at his craft, but his aftercare plan leaves a lot to be desired! That being said I have to seek out info and take it all in . My surgeon advised me to take in 600 calories a day, through the first year. I followed that until I figured out I did better taking in more calories. Everyone's different. I figured out I had to tailor my plan to me. I do not dispute what you say about following your surgeons advice. I see you've done very well, and appreciate all you do on this board, especially the recipes! Have a great vacation! Kirsten

ABout the absorbtion... what Im saying is everyone absorbs a different amount, and different types of things better than others. I may absorb 60% of my calories/protein etc... someone else maybe only absorb 40%, another 70%--- Im saying you cant generalize.... because it's unknown... There are also people on our support group that just don't absorb a particular vitamin, while other's do... Its great your out to get your own info... we need to just remember, we are people... everyone has their own opinions... but everyone should be following their surgeon... Our surgeon has been in practise for a long time, his after care is excellent... I will choose to follow what they want me to do. Just a friendly debate Hope you take it in the intended way Im pumped about CA!!! hehehehehehe I'll miss everyone though. Darlene

Darlene, You got me on the generalization, hate it being done and it's exactly what I did!!! Guilty! AAACKKK! What you say is true. But it also doesn't hurt for anyone to take a step back and look at what they're doing especially if they're stalling for extended periods, and see if something can be changed. I've known people who have increased their protein intake and have seen results. We're all after the same thing!!! SUCCESS!!!! Now you go to Cali and have a great time!!! Have some fun for me, cuz heaven only knows I could use a vacation! Kirsten

Kirsten, I am interested to read what you have to offer, but like Darlene, I am going to disagree. From what I understand our bodies will adjust the amount of protein it will absorb. The more you take in over time the more your body will adjust to the amount you are giving it and will adapt and absorb more over time. It is so funny to me how we all have had the same surgery and our doctors and nutritionists tell us all something different! Mine says to get 80-100g for men and 60-80g for women. If you would please email me what you have I am most interested to read it..... [email protected] Thank You Jennifer 355/295/140
