Topic: RE: Plateau Update
hi Mary Ellen- funny, I came here looking specifically for you and here is your update! I too am still stalled. In fact I met with my DR the other day and low and behold, I have lost exactly 4 lbs in the last 3 1/2 months. My surgery was on 3/1. I was wearing pants and shoes at my last weigh in and yesterday I was in shorts and no shoes. ( So no real loss there) I am just completely baffled as are they. The only thing I can figure is that I am not doing enough protien. My hair is extremely thin and it had been ridiculously thick preop. I am choking down yet another protien supplement daily bringing my supplemental protien up around 60 grams. I'm so damn frustrated i could just cry. Funny thing is.. I was seeing my dr about a 1 1/2 inch mass they found in my breast. I was more upset with my lack of wt loss and actually seeing it documented by a medical professional than the scare of the mass. My high bp is gone, I am working out to the point of excess and feel pretty darn good. But I would not have had my guts rearranged if I had known that I was going to lose a measly 50 lbs. I am scared that if that is it, then what about the 10-20% regain that most post ops get?? Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and let you know that you are not alone.

Topic: How I kickstarted my weight loss...
I have been reading thru some of these post and see some of u saying your weight loss is slow. I had the same problem and here is what I did to kick my weight loss in the bootie. All of us are different and your surgeon might not tell u to do the same thing I did. I am just doing exactly what my surgeon told me to do to start with. I have lost 14 pounds since August 25 and would have lost more but my monthly visitor stopped by and just left yesterday. The scales moved again this morning. If any of u want to try this it works for me. The following is a post I made on OH messageboard. Update on me for 8/30/05 Wow, I am so shocked! I was losing so slowly. Only 10-13 pounds a month. Then last Wednesday I went to see my surgeon for a check up, I had lost 70 pounds at that time. He was happy with my progress even though I wasn't. When I had surgery my surgeon (and all Dr's are different, I am not putting any Dr down this is just what my surgeon does) he told me after surgery I would be eating 3 meals consisting of 2oz each. I measured for maybe a couple of weeks, but then I stopped measuring. I was told and had read on the boards that hardly anyone measured. I never let myself get full, I just ate small amounts, small bites and took 30 to 45 mins to consume my meal. That worked because I lost 70 pounds before my 5 month check up last week, but my weight loss slowed down to where I hadn't lost any in 2 weeks. I had a brain fart after I went to the Dr last week. That night I thought well, tomorrow I am going to start measuring 2oz exactly, no more popcorn snacking, no more a chip here and there. I also started measuring my liquids and now get in more than 100oz of something sugar free each day. Thursday I was still sitting at a loss of 70lbs. I now only eat 3 meals a day, 2oz consisting of cheese cubes, peanut butter, eggs, and meats high in protein. I am loving this! That was Thursday, this is Tuesday and I have lost 10 pounds. I am so happy! Of course I can't brag to Dr Shina because then I would have to say I wasn't measuring like I was supposed to and he might not be happy about that, lol. I am a big chicken. I also started doing some new exercises. Nothing hard or strenuous. Also Dr Shina told me that Diet Coke Zero will not hurt me or impede my weight loss! Yeah, Diet Coke Zero!!! I hate regular diet cokes but love this one! Hugs and God Bless Angela Open RNY 3/24/05 313/233/157??? P.S. I guess the moral to this is, do what your Dr tells u to do! LOL Hugs Angela Open RNY 3/24/05 313/229/140??? Oh, before my monthly visitor I was averaging a loss of 1-3 pounds a day. I hope no one sees this as bragging because I'm not. I wish someone had posted something like this before when I was only losing maybe 10 pounds a month. Hope this helps someone. Love, Angela

ThankYou Marcia for your supportive response! Hopefully it is just fear at this point about how things are going. I feel that up to now I have been successful, I just feel this past two weeks I have really blown it and am amazed at what I eat. In the next two months I will find out how I truly am doing. I hope to come back here with an inspirationial note for those who feel like they have lost the maximum and are done at just 5-6 months out. I do feel much healthier and no doubt have added years to my life. I will follow your clues and hit the protiens again, dont know what a boca burger is though? Dawn

Wow, I can't imagine being able to eat that much. My surgeon tells all his patients before surgery that for the rest of our lives we will be eating 2oz at our meals. I was a bad girl and stopped using my 2oz cup to measure but on August 25 I started measuring my 2oz's for my 3 meals a day and also measuring liquids to make sure I get in 100oz of something sugar free a day. I have lost 14 pounds since then, it would have been more but I had PMS until yesterday. The scales started moving again this morning though. I know all surgeons are different and we each gotta do what we feel we need to and I am doing exactly what he told me too cause its working for me. I don't snack, no chips, no popcorn, no breads. Meats baked or grilled. Cheese and eggs and tuna plain. My weight slowed to about 10 pounds a month before I started doing what I was supposed too. I don't know what to tell ya. I am just going to do what I need too. I do know once I reach goal, I will be eating 5-6 2oz meals a day to maintain. Hugs Angela Open RNY 3/24/05 313/229/140???

LK, I'm 6 months out on the 30th, and like you worry about what and how much I eat. It's proof that every weightloss surgery's program is different, because, while you're allowed to have sandwiches, I've not been released to have anything "white" or "white derivative" ... translation: no bread, no rice, no pasta, no potatoes, etc. I use a shallow salad bowl (about 1 and 1/4" deep) as my "dinnerplate" and I measured it as 8 fluid oz capacity. I don't weigh my food so I don't know the exact oz of the food each time I eat. I just never fill that bowl to the sides or above the depth of it. I'm eating mainly cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, chicken, fish, and white-meat pork (can't tolerate beef well, or eggs), some fruits. Usually my meat portion is no more than the size of a very small chicken breast or half a butterfly porkchop. I have 2-3 tablespoons of cooked veggies with my meat usually. It takes me (maybe) 20 minutes to eat a meal. I'm presently in a plateau (last two weeks), but I'd lost 110 lbs by the time that started. Weighed 400+ before surgery, so I've still got a LOT of weight to lose. When I type out here what I'm eating it doesn't seem like much compared to pre-surgery ... but in my head it certainly seems like too much. My hunger has returned now, so I feel as if I'm constantly battling the urge to "graze" ... and I combat that (for now, I'm succeeding) with more protein drinks, fruit or cheese, and water. Trust me, don't think you're alone in worrying you've stretched your pouch ... I do too, because I can eat sooooooo much more than to begin with. I think it's only human to be worried about it. Best wishes, Myra

Dawn, how can you even think you are a failure???You have lost SEVENTY POUNDS!!!!!!! That is huge!!!!! I am seven months and 5 days on the losing side/new life. I have lost 76 lbs. and have not lost anything in about 6 weeks. I have noticed though that I am still losing some inches.....as evidenced by the fact that I went to Wally World this week and bought myself a pair of size 14 jeans that were regular cut, not relaxed ....and they fit.......Then I tried on a pair of size 12 stretch jeans, again regular fit......and they fit too. Of course I bought them!! I can eat just about anything now so I have to watch for the munchies too. Protein bars, nuts and cheeses are now staples in my diet.....Boca burgers too. Don't really enjoy regular hamburgers like I did bs (before surgery!) Look at all the good things that have changed in your lives as a result of having the surgery. I actually saw someone I had not seen in 2 years and she did not know who I was...until I started talking to her!!! How much more energy do you have? And , how many years have you added to your life by stopping being so heavy. Your body is adjusting to the smaller you, just give it time and the numbers will start changing again. Look for the little things that are different. good luck!!! AND CONTINUED SUCCESS!!!! Marcia
