I am 11 days post op and I am having trouble getting enough protein in each day. I have been taking unjury which is 20 gr. The only way I can even consume one pack in a day is with carnation inst. brkfst or something like that. It takes me 90 min. to consume it. Well that doesn't leave time for my 3 meals aday I'm supposed to be eating. If I try mixing it with yogurt or pudding or something I get very little protein because I can only eat 2 oz of that at a meal right? Am I all confused here? What am I doing wrong? Does anybody know what i am talking about?I am avery frustrated post-op person right now!

Deborah, The early days, postop, are very difficult to get protein in. As your eating options expand, you'll be able to do it. Try splitting your meals from 3 to 6. That worked for me when I was postop. Hang in there; it will get better.

Deborah, Hang in there!! This will pass. Dont worry about not getting in the full amount of protein this early on...it will come...honest!! I use unflavored protein powder mixed with Diet V8 Splash...if it takes 90 minutes to drink it so be it...at lest you are trying!!! Keep your eye on the prize as this will pass!!! I'm not sure I understand your question about only getting in 2oz at a time when you mix the protein powder with the yogurt. Is 2oz all you can hold, or is that all you think you're allowed to eat at one sitting? It's one thing if that's all you can hold, but I'd be really surprised if your program is limiting you to 2 oz of yogurt at a time when you're 5 months out. I've been able to eat, and encouraged to eat, a full 8oz cup since I was about 2 months out. Soft foods like yogurt won't fill you up much - they pass through your pouch quickly and I don't think you're in danger of stretching out with soft foods. But definitely something you should check with your program. Now, harder foods like meats and such are a different story. I am allowed to eat 3oz at a meal, but have a very very hard time getting in all 3 oz at once. I would think it almost impossible to get in enough protein if your entire meal consists of 2oz of yogurt. Just my 2 cents opinion, and that's about all it's worth. But again, if you think you are permitted to only eat 2oz at a time, I'd double check wtih your program and make sure that's accurate for being 5 months out. Seems like a very small amount! Now I'm ultra-confused! I missed the 11 days out part because she's posting on the March, 2005 board and has a surgery date posted of March, 2005!!!! Thanks for clearing that up, I think. Although I'm still confused... LOL. Mary Ellen

In the first few weeks, you probably can't get the recommended protein everyday, and that is OK. As soon as I was allowed by my dr. I ate soft cooked eggs every day and ham or chicken spread (mushy) with low-fat mayo & cheese on fat-free wheat melba toast. I could only eat a couple of bites, too, but I felt it was the best I could do and haven't had any problems. I wasn't able to stomach any of the high protein drinks (except the Sugar free Carnation Instant Breakfast) I found at the time. Don't worry, very soon you will be able to eat a better variety of food and can concentrate on your protein first at every meal. The lack of variety got pretty old by 8 weeks, but once I passed that mark, it's been smooth sailing. Good luck!
