What's for breakfast??

Hi, I'm having a bit of difficulty with breakfast ... I can't seem to figure out what to eat that's allowed and that I can tolerate. I was previously an egg lover, but can't deal with eggs now, so they're out. To complicate things further, my dietitian's rules say "nothing white" ... so no cream of wheat, grits, potatoes, etc. (she even includes oatmeal in that list) ... and no bread products of any kind ... so no bagels, toast, etc ... and no cold cereals, either. I mostly eat yogurt or fruit for breakfast, but that's getting old. I'm really craving bacon lately, but I've left it alone because of the fat content. Given my restrictions, anyone have any suggestions for breakfast? thanks! Myra

Breakfast is very difficult. I can't eat eggs anymore either, they make me gag. I usually just have a piece of leftover chicken, a yogurt, a slice of toasted whole wheat bread with cheese or a protein drink. Boring, I know, but it doesn't bother me much, since I know if I eat anything else I'll feel like crap all day. Wish I could help you more. Good Luck!

Breakfast for me depends on the morning rush. I usually have a piece of ham and cheese rolled up. SOmedays I get a thin slice of lox and spread cream cheese on it and have that. I also love the soy crisps. I take some cream cheese and spread that one them and have that for a quick meal. It is the worst meal of the day to fix trust me. I try to get it ready before I go to bed the night before and zip lock it. As for eggs I too loved them before surgery. Now I gag just looking at them. Try turkey bacon done in a microwave. It cuts the fat. It also tastes pretty good.

Myra, If you like yogurt add some cottage cheese to it. It changes up the texture and has a lot of amino acids and nutrients not found in standard animal proteins. If you want to ditch the yogurt completely, you can have it with applesauce, pineapple, salsa, or whatever takes your fancy. If you are really craving bacon, you could put some lean ham lunchmeat in a non-stick pan to "crisp" it up. It is a low fat alternative to bacon...and tasty to boot. Jeannie

Thanks everyone! I'm just glad to know I'm not the only one that's not enjoying breakfast anymore or that's having trouble with eggs now. I'm definitely going to try the turkey bacon, but have tried the ham and didn't get it down very easily either. Lunch and dinner are easy compared to figuring out my a.m. meal. thanks again, Myra PS I got a sample packet of all the Revival Baked Pasta Soy chips flavors (11 little individual sized bags). I've only tasted three flavors so far and I have to say every one so far has been delicious ... especially the "Oh My, Apple Pie" ones!

I have to say ham and sausage are both out for me. I love turkey bacon, very little to no fat, tastes great and easy to handle. Also I know you said your not supposed to have cold cereal, but Kashi, Go Lean cereal has soy protien in it and I don't have any problem with it. Since it has soy protein it has less carbs. Good luck, Billie

Myra, I had an egg issue too, so I decided to try Eggbeaters and I was pleasantly surprised. They have some nice additives like chives and are remarkably tasty. Another advantage is that they are lower in calories (and fat, of course) and have really nice protein content. Now here is some good news. Last week I went out to breakfast and forgot to tell them to substitute eggbeaters in the scrambled eggs. So, they came and I decided to try them. Voila! No more problems with eggs. They went down fine and I didn't get that overstuffed feeling after two bites that I used to get. People have told me that foods that bother us soon after surgery often don't bother us after a while. I was glad to find out that was true. Turkey bacon is pretty good, but it has fat also. Once I discovered that, I decided to treat myself to a strip of real bacon every once in a while. It is a treat. I'm surprised your doctor doesn't want you to have oatmeal. Must be the carb thing because it's so darn good for you. Good luck. Donna

Hi Myra, I either have Diet V8 Splash with unflavored protein powder or a protein bar...Zone or Detour are my favorites. I have to more or less eat in the car on the way to work so thats why I go this route. On the weekends when I make big breakfasts for my family I usually will have a strip of bacon and an egg. Good luck figuring out what will work for you!! Michelle

Hi, I agree with Billie...the Kashi Go Lean cereal is great. I usually do 3/4 cup and that only has 110 calories and 5g of sugar. Good news: 8g of Fiber and 10g Protein in such a little amount. It tastes pretty good for it to be as loaded as it is. Also, the Kashi granola bars are VERY good. Great almond taste, but not as much protein as the cereal. I also agree with the Zone Perfect bars. I can't ususally eat a whole one (only half), but they're awesome. (Caramel Cluster Cruch-good stuff.) KV

RE: Zone Perfect Bars I've really been searching for the best protein bar ... is this in stores or just online? If in stores, can you tell me where you've bought it? Protein bars have been a bane to me ... I feel like I've spent a fortune looking for the right kind for me. I'd sure appreciate some help on this. thanks so much!
