Medical Scare and Really Tired

Hi Everyone, it's Pamela again. Well my previous malnutrition that we thought was under control went crazy last friday and I dehydrated to the point of dropping my blood pressure and had a racing heart. I spent hours hooked up to IVs and other support meds. Saw my surgeon yesterday who seemed in almost disbelief that my condition is so poor and can figure out why I am staying nauseous all the time. He plans to scope if if condition stays the same. However my primary is not willing to wait fearing something worse may happen. I am feeling frustrated that my surgeon seems to be reacting so slowly when my nutritions and primary are so concerned. When I weighed in at surgeon's office yesterday he said by his records I am down 81 lbs in 4 months. Too much for my starting point. My home scale says 71 lbs. Anyway- for some reason he keeps wanting to give my body more time- meanwhile I am having more complications. I just feel tired of fighting. Surgeon wants to wait 1 more month while I take nexium to see if muscles relax at pouch. I just want answers and to feel better. My primary wants to send me to a high level endocronologist that specializes in bariatric patient follow-up care and monitors blood differently and can recommend dietary and medications that help recovery and can pin point damage that may be occuring. I am so tired I am having trouble concentrating at work, tired all the time, have a racing heart and throbing head. I am glad my primary is taking the lead but ticked my surgeon just seems to want to make me go away. ANyway- My primary is really taking this serious and I appreciate that he is willing to get into a complicated case. Sorry to unload- just feeling scared and tired.

It sounds like your primary is on the right track. Everytime I hear someone say that their doc told them to wait and see I just get so angry. Definately seeking a second opinion is the right course of action. You are paying good money, you should expect good care. Try to get as much protein as you can, that will help with the fatigue. And drink as much water as you can to keep from getting dehydrated. I would definately say go see the endocronologist, they should be able to help get you going in the right direction. Good luck and let us know how things come out. Toni Lap RNY 3/21/05 267/192

Pamela, I have to agree with Toni...go to who your primary wants you to see. Could it be possible that your surgeon didn't do the surgery correctly and is just waiting to see if the problem straightens itself out? I'd get in to see the other doctor ASAP... Keep us informed! Susie

Sorry your surgeon is so lazy in your medical care. Glad your PCP is on the ball and proactive for you. Stick with her. Go see a specialist who KNOWS about post-op bariatric care - that is SOOOO important. Not all drs are the same in bariatric understanding and knowledge. Case in point - when I went to ER 3 weeks after my RNY - they saw I was low in potassium so they brought me two HUGE horse pills to take, and I look at the pills and look at the nurse and say "I just had gastric bypass surgery. I can't swallow pills that big." She's like really? She went and told doctor and dr came in like "what's the problem"? LOL I had to educate him on the stoma, pouch, etc. SCARY!!!!! Keep us posted on your progress on this. You are in my prayers and I hope you get to feeling better soon. Hugs, Trisha

Hi to everyone who has been so supportive. My primary finally got a hold of my surgeon. They are scoping me on Monday morning 07/11/05. Repeated tons of blood work and I am being referred to Endocronologist who specializes in bariatrics. My PCP is absolutely the best. Saw him again yesterday and diagnosed me as having clinical starvation. Is offering to take me out of wor****il testing and corrections are completed. If I am FMLA eligible I will come out of work for a month. I am tired and having a hard time concentrating and keeping track of details. I will let you know how I am doing Monday afternoon. Again thanks for all the support!

I read your original post and did not know what to say other than what was said before so I did not post. I am glad that you are finally going to be scoped to find out what is wrong. Clinical starvation Oh my! I am glad there is someone on your team that is proactive! Please let us know how it goes on Monday. I will be praying for you.

If u feel or know that something isnt right and u are not happy with your surgeons reaction to how u are feeling... I would definitely get a second opinion... I am glad your primary care doc wants to know what is going on right away. Take care of yourself and I hope you are feeling better soon. Bonnie
