I quit
I thought about this surgery for YEARS, switched insurance companies, pay high premiums and waited a year to be able to get it. I had the gastric sleeve portion of the DS on March 22, started at 351 day of surgery, went to 330 after 1 month, to 323 after 2 months and now NOTHING. I give up. I have waited so long and nothing is happening . everyone else is going great guns, losing like mad ...me, nothing...I have been on an eating binge just like pre surgery days this long weeekend. I had 3 chocoilate eclairs on Saturday, chips and buttered popcorn on Sunday. Itallion Ice and candy raisins today. I have lost all hope and I just do not care anymore. I am supposed to lose 100 pounds to have the 2nd 1/2 of the DS, the malabsorptive, gut surgery...I will never lose 100 pounds and I just cannot do this any more. I cancelled my 3 month surgeon folllow up today and I do not think I am going back. i do not have the dumping, sugar does not bother me, I can eat a couple handfuls of cany and a whole eclair no problem. I am just sick
Oh hun,
We are surgery twins. I had my RNY same day. I was 331 day of sugery. I am now 286. And most of the weight loss was in the first 6 weeks. I thought I would lose so much faster. I still wear the same clothes. I can eat anything, too. Had cake and ice cream yesterday (was my birthday party). I had a really small peice of cake and a spoonful of ice cream. But, much less than I would have before WLS.
But, think back to why you had this surgery????? You had to have reasons and a really good ones. I know that my aching back and knees were a motivator for me. Also, I was short of breathe walking in and out of work. Now I am walking without limping and I am not short of breath.
That makes me estatic. I remind myself that I didn't have my insides rerouted for nothing and that usually helps me make better choices.
This weekend is in the past. Now it is time to start new tomorrow.
I have my 3 month check up on Wednesday. I don't want to go either but I am going to go and make sure I am ok. You need to do same. Reschedule that appointment and take one day at a time.
You can do this. Look at what you went through to have this surgery.
Terri
You are another turtle in this weight race I see. We have to keep our CHINS up and not get discouraged. We have to keep in touch and help each other. I too had the knee problems I have had 4 surgeries this past year including TWO total knee replacements. I guess that is part of my depression. I am overwhelmed. thanks for you kind words.
Kathy,
Are you on something for your depression? Please if you are not go to doc and get something, if you are, you need more. I am a nurse practtioner and I am a frm believer in antidepressants. Plus I have personal experience. We do need to support each other. And do keep in touch. I will let you know about my 3 month check up. I looked at my own labs (hehe ) and I already know I am anemic and a lil low on B12. So we will see what the doc says.
My knee problems came about after a bad car accident last August. Also, I literally blew out my right ankle. I was in so much pain the 2 weeks before surgery, that I was using my walker again. So, I feel WLS was a no brainer for me. I had to have it. Now I walk without a limp, most of the time anyways. That is just with 45 lbs gone. I can exercise now. I cannot wait to see what the bext 45 lbs gone, will bring back to my life.
Please keep in touch,
Terri
The thing with DS is that your stomach is bigger than RNY's. You also haven't had the malabsorptive part of the surgery yet, so you don't dump and still absorb 100% of the calories you eat. Once you have the malabsorptive part, you will lose much faster b/c the DS bypasses more of your intestine than the RNY. (you will also need to take more vitamins)
Just b/c you CAN still eat these things doesn't mean you should. You have been losing weight--a little less than 10 lbs. a month--b/c you can't eat quite as much as you could before surgery, but the food choices and grazing are slowing you down. I know none of us had surgery to be on the Atkins diet for the rest of our lives, but right now you're pretty much able to eat 2/3 of what you used to be able to, so you're still going to have to diet until your surgery is finished.
I'm a little baffled as to why you have to lose 100 lbs. before you can have the malabsorptive part of the surgery, did your surgeon give you a good reason??
Don't give up yet--talk to your surgeon, let him know about the problems you've been having. Track your diet, I personally love fitday.com. It helps hold you accountable for what you've eaten. I've stumbled across a few bad things that I can tolerate after surgery, but eating something like that takes away from the valuable protein and nutrients I *have* to get in each and every day. I force myself to put everything into fitday. Seeing myself come up short on my protein b/c i was bad and had a blueberry muffin is a good reminder of why I had the surgery and of the changes I knew I had to make.
I'm not trying to be harsh, and I'm sorry if I came off negatively. I really hope that you go back to your surgeon, and discuss the problems you've been having with losing the weight.
