Can hardly eat at all

I am 6 weeks post op and I can only get in maybe 6 to 8 bites of food per day. I've been scoped, had an upper GI, and a cat scan and the doctor says all is normal. So, why is it that I can't eat very much? Am I alone, or does anyone else have this problem?

Is your surgeon aware of this or just your PCP doctor? You need to contact your WLS surgeon ASAP!!! My surgeon said that if I ever experienced what you listed above to call him asap and not wait. So call your surgeon and he can point you in the right direction and see what is going on. You said that you can eat 6-8 bites of food per DAY. What kinds of foods are you talking about? Soft foods like refried beans or green beans or are you referring to meat and other solid food? Being 6 weeks out, it'll be easier for you to eat soft food & pureed food, scrambled eggs, ground beef/turkey, shrimp, salmon, etc. and you can probably get more in. Solid food - intake will be a lot less at 6 weeks out. In fact, are you even allowed to have solid food at 6 weeks out? I am 2 months out and I'm just now experimenting with solid food. I could handle corn tortillas, crackers, chips, soy crisps and stuff since week 4 or so. Those go down easy.

Yes, I am on solid food, however I mostly eat soft food still. For example, today I had 2 bites of sausage, and 5 bites of soft cheese. Even if I eat something like Jello, I can only eat a few bites and then I am very full.

Hi Kerri, I am in the same boat with you. Everytime I tried something solid, the pain stops me from eating it. I have tried, eggs, egg beaters, tuna, salmon, and soft pot roast. The only thing that goes down and doesnt hurt is chili, yogurt, and spagetthi o's. It is so frustrating, I went to my surgeon this week and the nutritionist and neither of them are concerned they say some just take longer from the switch to the solid foods. they told me just to keep trying new things and if something hurts wait a week before trying it again. Sometimes I even feel like the liquids hurt going down. Because I know I can't be full just by one small bite of tuna. They are just still persistent and concerned that I do get protein shakes in me to make up for the food protein not being eaten and get the fluids. I was told between 50-90 grams of protein and at least 64 oz of water. I am still under what they are requesting. BUt I keep saying this will pass. I never imagined I would be scared of food or would hate the idea that I need to eat. hope you feel better soon! For a snack I had a peice of 3/4 of an oz of soft light cheese and I couldn't fini**** Everyone says i should go slower but how slow can I go? xoxo Sheryl

I just made 2 months Saturday and having the same problem. I do not experience any pain but extreme nausea. My dietician says it's because I'm not getting in enough protein. Anyway, it's starting to really get me down. I have no desire to eat whatsoever. They keep saying it will pass, to give it another month or so.

Oh boy, we all are having challenges surrounding solids. I must admit that I was not able to even do protien drinks for the first 2-3 weeks. My nutritionist and I went through multiple kinds just to find something that wasn't thick or too heavy. Now I can do some solids but I can relate to another post saying that the fear of getting ill (or scared to eat) does slow you way down. I have learned to take one or two bites and wait for 10 minutes when introducing something new. That way if it makes me ill there is so little of it. I seem to do well with: -salmon -Simply Jif on low fat wheat thins -low fat cheese melted on wheat thins -scrambled egg -tiny bit of spagetti made with ground turkey -shaved deli meat rolled up -ripe cantolope or peaches- no skin -1/2 peice of honey wheat toast -collard green cooked tender But trying new things is still hard. I usually try new things when I at home in case something goes wrong. PS. Tried some fun liquids too: -Diet Snapple any kind -Sugar free/fat free General Food International Coffee -Fruit2 0 Oh and one last little tip. I have learned with soup it has to be all the same consistancy for me- for some reason. If it is a broth soup with chunks of veggies- It has the same effect as eating and drinking at the same time. A big no-no. SO I blenderize them or get a soup that is all thick or all runny etc.

I can't eat that much either. I find tha****ermelon goes down very easily. As much as I love hamburger, and can do so many things with it, that just doesn't seem to agree with me. I can take a bite or two, and it just seems to lay in my stomach. I don't throw it up, it just doesn't feel right. I hope that changes in time. My doctor said I may just be the type of person who can never eat very much after the surgery. He didn't seem to be alarmed.
