Infection at surgery site....

Hi, I am a little more than 4 weeks out and while my initial surgery and hospital stay were great, I have since had 2 urinary tract infections and now I have an infection at my surgery site. It is red and inflamed and painful to the touch. I went to my regular dr today and he consulted with my surgeon. I was already on 875mg of Augmentin 2 times a day and now they changed me to 2000 mg twice a day PLUS a shot of Rocephin. I see my surgeon on Thursday and was advised to go to the ER if it gets bigger or I get a fever but I am really concerned about all these infections. I even spent 3 nights in the hospital last week with a fever and chills before they determined it was a UTI. Anybody else having this kind of problem ??? Thanks Terri 335/324/295/160

Terri--I'm so sorry to hear about your rough go. Although I haven't had any UTI's, I have developed a cyst that I"m going to the doctor for. I would def keep an eye on everything and go to the hospital if anything changes--not worth getting sicker over. DOn't worry though, I'm sure everything will work out--remember, things will get easier! I'm thinking of ya! Courtney

Thanks for the response Courtney. Hopefully the cyst will be nothing big and will go away on it's own. Mine is still red and inflamed and the antibiotics are killing me with an upset tummy but hopefully it is doing it's job. Lucky for me, Dr has me out of work so I don't have to try and get to the bathroom at work. Thanks again, Terri

Hi Terri The fact you are all those big gun antibiotics should take care of the infection at the incision site. My husband had the same thing. We ended up in the ER, but he had no fever and all his labs were normal so they sent him home on Keflex for 10 days. When he went to his surgeon, he was told the surgeon probably wouldn't have done anything, just let nature take it's course. Often, the antibiotics kill off the good bacteria and you end up with a yeast infection at the incision site. His incision is still draining a very small amount, 7 weeks after his surgery, and still a little red, but the surgeon says it's OK. Hang in there!

Linda, Thanks so much for your response. It is good to know that I am not the only one with this problem (though I'm sorry anybody else is having to deal with it). I am so happy for you that you are going thru this together! What fun you are going to have exploring your new bodies and maybe he will even want to SHOP with you since he will need new clothes too! Thanks again and have a great day, Terri

UTI's can happen for any reason - doesn't mean it's related to surgery. I actually went to the ER about a month ago with some bladder problems and they diagnosed me with UTI, however I found out when I followed up with my PCP 3 days later that I tested negative for UTI. Take LOTS of vitamin C (chewable of course) because that helps our immune system and fights infections. Definitely keep an eye on your incision site and when you see surgeon on Thursday have him do what he needs to do to fix it. Take all the meds you need to take because infection at the site is serious. Ask him if he left a sponge or something in there. Ask if you can have an X-ray done of the site to see what is in there causing this! Tell your surgeon all that you have been through this month. I've said a prayer for you tonight. I hope everything clears up and all is okay. keep us posted!!!

hi, I had my surgery end of March, got a fever of over 103, went to my regular doctor. He discovered I had a bladder infection and a strep throat. He prescribed Augmentin for me too, and this resolved my problem. He said the bladder infection MIGHT have been caused by the catheter, but it wasn't anybody's fault. I was worried that my incision that was still open and draining would get infected, but luckily, this did not happen. I hope you are feeling better now.
