Ok, so I'm drinking at or above 60 of protein every day. I know men need more than women but my surgeon's book simply states 60 a day for everybody. How much is everyone averaging a day? I like my drinks and usually get in 30 each drink but realize that my body can't absorb all of it (probably) with each drink. My wife and I fight over this as they made it clear that I shouldn't get in too much. What does your nutritionist recommend for you men? Dave

Hey Dave, My surgeon recommends 64 for men and 60 for women. I usually get in about 70-80 for the reason you stated above (malabsorbtion). Too much protein is not good as it may perpetuate gout (especially in the earlier stages), excrete calcium, and actually hinder your weight loss.

My surgeon says I need to get 70-100g of protein a day. I've only made the 70 mark twice in 6 weeks. I usually range between 40-60, so I guess I'm not doing that bad. I'm just sick of protein drinks and haven't had those in a couple weeks. I'm doing the protein bars now.

My surgeon and nutritional team says men 72, women 60. I cannot bear to look at another protein shake. Since I am now on soft foods, I am eating protein bars (up to 30 g per bar) but I have to eat one over the course of the day (one bite, wait an hour) to avoid getting nauseous. Otherwise, lots of high protein foods. I eat salmon (1 1/4-lb salmon burger is 20 g, for example). My wife found a buffalo burger at Trader Joes that is 40g! I'm a bit nervous of trying it, as I know that some people have trouble with red meat and I haven't tried it yet. Cottage cheese (1/2 C) is 11 g. Egg Beaters with low-fat cheese is 13. It just comes down to being creative and attentive. Hope it helps. Greg

Greg, Which protein bar has 30 g? Most of the ones I've tried have 17-21 g. I am on pureed food until next Thursday, but protein shakes made me very queasy, so I just chew the bars to death. Sorry to hear you have to eat the bars so slowly. The seasoned vets in my support group all say that those kinds of problems get better with time. I hope that's true. Donna
