Can't handle protein shakes!
I am having a really hard time drinking any protein shakes. I have even tried the ready to drink ones. I just end up feeing sooooo sick...like I'm going to throw up. I am able to add alittle protein to pudding, and sometimes I can handle that. But I am supposed to be getting 73 grams of protein in a day, and it is just so hard!! I get to start pureed foods on Monday; is it easier to get the protein in that way?
I still struggle with protein each day and I'm 4 1/2 weeks out. I average between 40-60 a day. Have yet to even get to 70g (minimum my surgeon encourages). But we are still newly post-op, so we'll get there eventually. Surgeon said that my GOAL is to get there. It'll take a while for my pouch to heal from surgery.
I got sick of protein shakes too, so am on an Isopure kick right now. Tastes like Gatorade or Crystal Light I guess. You find them in the refrigerated section of any health food store. They are easy to get down, fruity and FULL of protein.
Funny, I haven't had a problem yet. I bought Isopure Dutch Chocolate and began mixing it with Carb Countdown milk, and It tastes just like chocolate milk. It is definately a good choice. I bought the Creamy Vanilla Isopure and that's not so hot, so I"m going to look for some SF chocolate Syrup or Mocha Syrup to flavor it OR buy some Carb Countdown Chocolate MIlk to flavor it, if they have it. I'm not wasting 37.00 it costs to buy the tub.
I also tried the Isopure bottled drink on Friday at work. IT was pretty good. VERY sweet, but I am going to go buy a bunch more, because when I go to work, I think this will help me get my protiens in every day as it's got 40 grams in that 20oz drink, so it will count towards my protiens, and my liquids.

I have had a terrible time getting in my protein as well, I can't drink anything dairy, so the Whey protein mix I found is out for sure! The soy has a kind of weird after taste, and everything else has me defeated in my head, so for now, I am trying to get it all in with food....not doing great, but not doing terrible either. There are so many things that trigger me not feeling well that it is hard! I could eat or drink ANYTHING that didn't move before....everyone warned me....."your taste will change", I guess I didn't think mine would, but it has already! So, at just 3.5 weeks out, NOTHING tastes good at all, what does taste good seems to make me sick! Just keep plugging along doing your best and remember what Trisha keeps saying...72 is the goal and we have to give ourselves time to get there! (thanks for the reminder Trish). JK
I had the same problem with the protein shakes. The Isopure made me gag, so I tried the Carb Control Carnation Instant Breakfast made with 1% milk, and add a scoop of unflavoured protein powder. That boosts the whole thing up to 33gm/serving.
The one key I found was to drink the shakes slowly. It takes me about 40-45 minutes to drink my Instant Breakfast in the morning, but it stays down.
I also went to the Bariatric Eating website and sent away for a whole bunch of samples to see if I could find some other things that were high in protein and didn't offend my palate. I just started testing them the other day.
I just found out some thing LOL shame on ME over the weekend I went out with a friend and I had a protein shake and I didn't get that sick feeling that I get most the time ..... I was drinking them to fast .... when I was with her we was talking and I was drinking so that made me drink slower with all the talking we was doing.. may be try that not sure if that is what is going on with you but I see now it's what was going on with me...Good Luck

Hello Terri iam 4 weeks out and i had a hard time doing the shakes after i got home for the hospital so , i call the dr's office and told them that i was so gassie and they told me to try the Isopure drinks that i can get form the GNC store it dose cost more but it is good it is like drinking a liquied jolly rancher it has 40g of protin in it
Try using a Juice machine. Add one apple of your choice, some watermelon including the rind, and add one or two protein whey protein portions. App. 23 grams of protein each. Add some ice chips if you like. I drink this every morning on my way to work. By the time I get to work, I am finished! The natural juice combined with the powder I buy from the vitamin store seems more palatable than just the powder with water.
Good luck!
