Janice, My doctor said, concentrate of high protein, low fat, low sugar if possible. I'm basically eating chicken, turkey, a bit of cheese and probably next week can start red meat (He told me to wait a bit that the light meats were easier tolerated). When I asked him about bread etc (carbs) he said they would 'fill' me up too fast and I might not get around to eating enough protein. If you don'****ch your protein your hair will suffer etc. And we are trying to burn up our fat reserves, not add to them! When I asked him about the number of calories he said I wouldn't be able to eat enough in one normal day to have to count calories. I had my surgery 3/14. Good Luck. Let us know if your np has better suggestions.

I don't have my nutrition binder here with me at work, but I know that looking at the numbers SCARE me right now because I'm not even close to where I should be. I should be getting in about 800 calories a day right now, but average around 600 most days. Protein supposed to be 70g-100g a day, but I usually get between 40-50. I keep trying to do better, but it's so much work!! LOLOL Every doctor/nutritionist is a bit different, so contact your program and see what they recommend. And being so new post op, don't freak out like I did thinking you aren't doing it right. We are working our way UP to meeting those goals. It's not achieved overnight!

The advice varies greatly because there are so many different programs, but Pennsylvania Hospital's policy is not to worry too much about calories. Early on, they want almost pure protein (64 g a day for women, 72 g a day for men). Don't be thinking about carbs until you are well into solid foods. Calorie counting should also come later. I agree that, early on, your pouch and intestines are swollen and not too happy with a big load of food, so do the best you can. Make sure you get in enough liquids (64 fl oz/day) and you'll be fine.

Hi Janice, My nutrionist recommended 40-75 grams of protein a day. She also said to avoid foods with more than 5 grams of fat per serving ( a normal serving, NOT our size serving haha), and not too eat anything that has sugar, or some form of it, in the first 5 ingredients. At this point we are not supposed to be worrying about calories or carbs, but a good range at this early stage is 600-800 calories a day. I actually have been keeping up with my calories today just to see how many I'm actually getting. So far I haven't got anywhere near that amount! Hope this helps!! Stacey RNY 3/3/05 362/324/150ish
