I had my RNY on 3.29 and today is my 1 week post op. I wasn't expecting to be in this much discomfort. They had a hard time intubating me and I have a sore in the back of my throat to one side, which is so painful, and it has made my ear so painful along with my right side of my face. I have so much trouble sipping my fluids, even sipping is painful. When I take my pain med it helps so then I can drink fluids. But I only have a couple doses left. Any one have throat or ear pain after from the tube? Any suggestions? I am so impatient with this pain. xoxo Sheryl

Hi Sheryl, I'm sorry you are in so much pain. I was there three weeks ago. It will get better! Five days post-op, I was having a rough time swallowing. I'm not sure if this will help you, because it had nothing to do with intubating me. I developed Thrush due to the heavy antibiotics I was on during surgery. My tongue was covered in a thick white substance. I tried to bru**** off with my toothbrush, but that wouldn't work. I went to the E.R. and my surgeon met me there. He gave me a clear, thick, RX to swish in my mouth (can't remember the name). It helped to numb my mouth. Then, I took Nystatin (sp?), a sweet orange liquid, and swished that around alot. It made my mouth feel much better, which in turn helped me swallow and get some liquids down. The Thrush cleared up a few days later, and I continued the 'swishing' for about a week. When my throat hurt extra bad, I even swallowed some of the Nystatin. Not sure if that will help, but it might. Perhaps it can numb the sore spot so that you can get some liquids down. Also, I split some of my pain meds in half to wean myself, and to make it last longer. Pain bothered me a bit when I ran out, but Tylenol helped. Good luck! Debbie

Call your doctor! You may have a laceration in your throat from the intubation, and the ear and throat pain may be caused by the laceration. Make sure you don't have an infection in your throat. That could certainly make things way worse. If you can't swallow, you can't get in the nutrition or fluids you need. Until you see your doctor, try to make your liquids as cold as you can tolerate. That may help soothe your throat.

Thanks all so much! I just made an appointment with my primary doctor and he will see me today in a few hours. I had called my surgeons office on Monday and requested a call from the surgeon, and was told by the office mgr in a very snotty tone "he is with patients all day" , no kidding I thought, I didn't expect him to be sitting around waiting to call me. But it is now wednesday 48 hours later and still no call. I called the surgeon's office back today and was told he wouldn't be able to talk to me until Friday, I hope someone who has a major problem knows this....Then was told my the assistant (who I do adore) to go to my Primary, I cannot understand why after such a major surgery you can't expect a phone call in return??? I am very disappointed and hurt. Well I am going to see my surgeon on Monday for my first follow up and I will hope he has time to talk to me during my appointment at least. xoxo Sheryl
