Chills and cramps

I am 6 days post op. I am not running a fever or have any s/s of infection. But I do have chills several times thru out the day, makes me feel like I have the flu or something. I used to be called HOT FLASH Harolyn so this is not my nature. I have also noticed that my stomach cramps alot, even when I eat just 1 ounce. IS that normal??? I ate grits -- it felt like rocks in my stomach, a soft scrambled egg felt like it was fighting back.... could GAS do this???

I'm not sure about the chills. I get hot flashes when I eat too many carbs as a pre-dumping thing. But at 6 days out, your pouch just may not be ready for solids--even soft ones. Try going back to creamy liquids. I found that blended fat free refried beans set better than almost anything else with protein. Add some milk or V8 juice to make it soupy. Soupy cream of wheat or oatmeal might also work. Also Sugar free yogurt. It will get better. Be patient. Teaching your pouch to eat is like teaching a baby to eat. Hang in there! Joy 3/1/2004

I would call your surgeon if the cold chills continue for 3 days a row. Are you only eating 1oz at a time? Are you taking only one bite a minute? Are you not drinking a 1/2 hour before, during or 1/2 hour after a meal? If you said yes to all three, then I am not sure what is wrong. Remember, your pouch and esophagus are still swollen from surgery and it's going to take a while to get back to "normal". If this continues, call your surgeon. Don't let something like this go on for too long. No, gas wouldnt' cause food to feel like rocks in your tummy or food to come back up (or feel like it is). Go back to liquids (full liquids) for the next 24 hours and ease back into soft foods is my suggestion.

When I was about a week post-op, I noticed that I was much colder than usual. Like you, I am well known for being extremely hot-blooded and this was unusual for me. I didn't even have to have a fan in my bedroom to go to sleep. It seemed to go away after a week or so and now I am back to normal. I still don't seem to be as hot all the time, but I don't have any chills either. Where before I seemed to be sweating all the time, now I am not. Chris S.

Hi, I have not had stomach cramps at all. However I do not that being cold after surgery is very common. I did go through chills also. After about a week that went away. I am 2 1/2 weeks out now and do not have them anymore. Just make sure you do not have a fever. I would check into the cramps. Good luck. Tracey

Hi Harolyn, I was very cold the first week or two after surgery (3/7/05); and now I'm just chilly sometimes. Today, we were out walking, and my husband was 'burning up' while I had on a long-sleeve shirt, and a fleece jacket! I've always been one to get hot, so this is unusual for me! Regarding the cramps, it may be too soon for solids for you. I had the same reaction to a scrambled egg a few weeks ago. Be careful. I think the advice you have already gotten is good - go back to liquids for a day or two. Good Luck! Debbie

I had surgery the same day as you. My surgeon recommends a clear liquid diet for 2 days, full liquids for 2 weeks, and then pureed food for 3-6 weeks. To hear you are eating eggs this early is astounding to me!! I have noticed I have been having hot and cold flashes as well. I don't have a fever either. I think it's part of ridding your body of the anesthesia. I recall having chills when coming out of the anesthesia for a different surgery several years ago.
