Hello Maggie! I have read your blog and can see now how very different each persons experience is depending on the surgeon it seems. My surgeon Dr Luis Gorospe here in Tulsa is the best. I was never nervous about the doctors, but I was concerned about how I would take it since it was my first ever surgery. My profile on the obesityhelp site tells the whole story of my surgery day, but I know my difficulties were because of my breathing mainly. Our surgeon has done over 3000 procedures and is one of the top surgeons in the country and he is always looking at the latest techniques for everything. My friend and I had surgery on the same day, same surgeon and we are each healing in our own time. We had to be on a liquid diet for 2days before and 2 weeks after surgery. I am just now getting to a point that I feel ready for soft, pureed foods. I think it may have something to do with the type of surgery too. Nowhere does it mention which kind of surgery you had,so could you put in a reply with that info? We had Roux-en-Y laproscopically, and we did not have anything external no drains they set up everything inside which dissolves on its own. We don't have dressings on the incision sites we had durabond which comes off in its own time also. I was in ICU for the 1st night, and was not allowed to move from my bed until the next morning but even though I was fading in and out of sleep all night it wasn't because my nurses were bothering me for anything it was mainly because of my breathing machine. All of the medication and everything was given to us via the IV, so I only had an IV to tote with me when I was walking which I did the 2nd day and was showered and ready to go home by the 3rd day at noon. My friend Melissa was showered before bed the 2nd night, which I probably could have done if I hadn't gone to bed by like 8p from being so tired. I guess I just mean to say I feel great now and am glad I did this, but I do believe one persons story is not necessarily what you will experience. I just encourage anyone who is getting ready for the surgery to talk with others who have had the procedure from the same surgeon. My surgeon has his own support group meetings where he and the asst surgeon is there to answer any questions and you get to meet people who have had the surgery even as recently as a week or so ago because he requires us to attend 1 meeting before and 1 after surgery so we can know exactly what to expect. I hope this helps a little for those who are looking to understand what happens when you go ahead with surgery. There are a few things about your story Maggie that I can relate to, but it's quite different from my own story. Glad you made the effort to write it down in order to helps those that are curious. Kudos to you! Take care.

Vanessa, I want to thank you for pointing out the fact that everyone has different doctors that do different things. So, I have put in my blog that this is MY experience. It seems that people hear these horror stories about the surgery before they get it and then end up scared. Yes, there are going to be problems for some people. But not for all of us. I personally didnt have any problems and have a doc that did things different than yours. I have to say, Im glad I didnt have to stay on just liquids for 2 weeks or that would have really drove me nuts...on the other hand, now that people know that there are both ways of doing things they have the choice of researching things and seeing if they may want to try something different than what their doc offers. I had the same surgery as you, the Laproscopic Roux-en-Y. So I am glad that you replied because obviously our doctors do things much different. I wish you well and hope that things continue to get easier for you. In the end I am sure we will both achieve the same goal. And that of course is what is important. Good luck, Maggie
