Confused and worried in PA
Hi Everyone!!!
I am scheduled for lap RNY next Weds the 16th, and went Tuesday (8th) for my postop nutrition class and I have to say I am so very confused now.... Basically the nutritionist contradicted SOOOOOOOO many things that I have been reading here.
Basically she said that we as postops make the decision when to go from clear liquids to full liquids to soft foods and so on. She said some ppl are on the 1st stage 2 weeks others 3 days. Also she said that we will be able to have anything that has less than 15 grams of sugar and that we should not do everything low fat. She is recommending the following for when I come home from the hospital: broth, sugar free popsicles, apple juice, grape juice, cranberry juice, pulp free juice bars, flattened diet ginger ale, 7up, or sprite. and has said that if we find that we are still hungry to try moving to the next stage. Now this worries me because I dont want to do ANY damage to my pouch. I would much rather be told when to move forward with food. Also she had a fit because I have limited my carbs to only about 25 per day now (I completely mistook the atkins diet) She said that we should only avoid simple carbs such as cakes, cookies, potatoe chips and that pasta, rice, potatoes are all good carbs and ones we should eat (once on solids). She also does not recommend protein shakes until atleast I am on soft foods ( I was hoping to use them as soon as I came home) She also said that she feels its a waste of money that if I wanted to boost my protein add a scoop of fat free dry milk to my whole milk and that will pump up the carbs. She also says that we should be shooting for 60 grams of carbs a day but I have heard many of you say that we need higher than that. And she is recommending 48 to 64 ounces of liquids between meals. Again I have heard higher. I really dont want to screw this up and now I am all confused as too what I need to do postop to ensure I maximize my weightloss. I am currently @ 310, I lost 7 lbs in 5 days but sent my sugar #'s skyrocketing next day I went back to drinking what I want and eating basically what I want and my sugar is back to its normal range. I am so confused now... I thought I was really on target with how and what I needed for my postop period but now I feel like I dont have a clue....... HELP PLEASE?!?!?!!?
I am scheduled for lap RNY the 29th of March and I did my pre surgery nutrition and I got several things different from you. The fluids I was told absolutely no soda. It is not the carbination that is the problem but something else in it. Drink 64 oz of water or decaf coffee/tea a day. The first 3 days are clear fluids. Then my doctor has his own rules of when a person changes to other foods. He will notify me when it is time to change. When I go to fulll liquids I can have the protein shakes. Then 2-3 weeks later I get the soft foods and after the first month I can do solids. I was told to eat my protein first, then my veg and finally if I had room my carb. We are told to drink the protein shakes as a taste variety but we are not to depend on them and should cut them out after we hit solids. We were also told no whole milk only skim plus. That has extra protein in it. I would talk to your doctor and ask for some clear guildlines. Let him know that you are feeling very confused about the information you are getting and reading. Hopefully he takes the time to talk to you and settle your concerns. I wish you the best in your loss.

Robin-I'm scheduled for an RNY on March 21 and my doctor is the one who has outlined my postop diet and said that I wouldn't see the nutritionist again until they were ready to move me to solids. He said the the liquid portion of my diet would last 4-6 weeks and he would be the one to decide when to move to the next step. But every doctor is different. Please call your doctor because every one is different and I wouldn't want you to get mis-information.
Ok,
First realize that most Doctors have their own programs. What you read on OH is what seems to be consistent in the gbp community. For example I just had gbp rny last wed. Now I'm a week out and down some 30lbs. well my Dr. is all about 4 weeks of protien shakes before moving on to soft foods, i.e. cottage cheese, mashed potatoes etc... I can tell you I will not make the 4 weeks. Yuk! I already started sugar free yogurt. I can also tell you that I will probably start cottage cheese and mashed potatoes very soon. Regardless of his recomendations.
Anyways, my point is you are going the best judge of how fast you progress to solid foods (regular diet). It is important to remember that early on your pouch will be swollen from surgery and may be sensitive to certain things. Go slow, make sure you get in enough protein this helps for healing your pouch and prevent lean mass loss durring your rapid weightloss early on.
One more thing. Try one new thing at a time and do it at home. Just in case it does not work for you.

I suggest that you follow your program. Everyone has a different opinion but I honestly feel that if you are able to keep the recommended dietary intake down without a problem that you follow your doctors orders. I myself had surgery 3/8 and will be on clear liquids until 3/15 then start the protein drinks until 3/22, add soft foods on 3/29 and progress to solid foods on 4/19. I was told soda of course no caffeine would be OK but must be flat. Absoultely no carbination at all for at least 6 months. Good luck and follow what guidelines you have been given. I have read alot on this website also, maybe too much. I decided I will follow my guidelines unless I have a problem with keeping things down or not loosing any weight. Good Luck and calm down. You have to not worry so much and relax. You will be fine.
