Grandson
Alton went last week to Tn and brought back his grandson to spend a week with us while he is on spring break. We have plans to go camping on Monday and come back home Friday. We will be on the Chattahoochie River in an area where the river is damned and we hope good fishing. Dalton is 12 and this is the first time he has been with his Granda Paw by himself.
Anyways, as I am the latest addition to the family, I have tried to be around and have not pushed myself into their lives. You never know how the step grandma will be taken. Yesterday, Dalton and I went shopping for specail foods he eats. We had not been in the car very long and he said..."what am I suppose to call you?" The 2 older grandaughters call me Martha and we have a nice relationship and they are 17 & 19. I looked at Dalton and said, " what do you want to call me?" He said, "I want to call you grandma". I was so estatic, you cannot imagine! I am finally a grandma! As I do not have any kids of my own, I thought this was something that would never happen. Now when he says "Grandma" I have to recongnize that he is calling me!
He is really a nice kid and all 3 of us are looing forward to camping next week and possibly him coming back for the summer.
Just thought I would share.
Martha
aww i had tears in my eyes reading your posting! My children are all in their 30's two are married with no plans at this point to having children for another few years. I am keeping my mouth closed and am not pushing them.
But
as a person who is desperately craving grandparenthood I could feel your joy at those simple words.
Congratulations.
Martha,
I don't have the Grandma gene and am so not ready to be a grandma, but I love that story. What a great feeling that must have been for you.
OK, I have to admit that I'm proud of my 23 year old son's cat and think it's the most special cat that ever walked the face of the earth. Maybe the Grandma gene is dormant in me.
Oh yeah, I have to say that you are really wise to not push yuorself into their lives and let them come to you. I'm in the same situation and this is new to me so I'm going to be watching you for pointers.
