Blood sugar rollercoaster TIP

I had my yearly exam with my WLS surgeon. My labs looked great, after a bout with low vit D and some Rx supplements. Weight is creeping back. I was surprised he did not fuss at me, but did help me figure out why I keep in the high/low blood sugar cycle. Heres the cycle: eat / get sleepy / wake up hungry with low blood sugar 2-3 hours after a meal. It was not so much WHAT I was eating as HOW OFTEN I found myself eating. And not feeling great most of that time. His suggestion: He calls this a classic case of late dumping caused by DRINKING WITH FOOD. I knew that drinking with food might cause me to eat more, but what I learned (or was reminded of) was that by forcing food out of the pouch qquickly, it causes a huge dump of insulin, followed by a blood sugar rush, followed by low blood sugar when the food is all metabolized and there is still too much insulin. I am paying attention, and the meals when I manage to not drink, I am not getting nearly as sleepy and I stay satisfied longer. It is a bad habit to break though--- I like spicy foods! Try it--it might help you! Joy

Angel I am happy to hear just about every thing is good!! Now, watch that drinking with your spicy food!! I also get tired after I eat, but I just attribute it to needing a nap, so I lay down and rest for about a half an hour then I feel better. You will be in my prayers. Boop

i sometimes have to lay down for a half an hour after eating too....and my surgeon told me that is another form of dumping. Maybe it is a certain combination of foods that cause it? I'm not sure. Joanie

Thank you Joy, I'm having a problem with low blood sugar. Its rare when I drink with a meal. But I will pay more attention to this starting now. I have an appointment with my doctor this week because of the low blood sugar. I'm also trying to take a look at when and how this happens to me. What i'm eating or doing the night before. Because it hits me usually at the beginning of each week. Mondays and Tuesdays I can pretty much tell that I will be fine in the morning then when I arriave at work the symptoms start. Shaking light headed. Usually need to run to the ladies room and I'm all off centered for the rest of the day. It might be that the man I am dating and I will go out to eat saturday nights. Its uaully later than I normally eat and its at nice places where their food is very rich. I enjoy it and I am watchfull of what I'm eating. Amounts, caolories, and such like that. But I am eating more and I am eating things that are richer than normal. Plus I'm also eating bread then. Those are things that are not in my diet. So maybe I've discovered why? Now on Sundays I get myself back to normal but it never fails mondays I can pretty much gaurenntee that I'm not gonna feel well. Then it started it hit me during the week towards the end of the week. Welll duh! We've been gettign together mid week now and going out to dinner! ARGGGGG is there ever a happy midium?

Thanks Joy. I think I have the same problem. I guess we all get a little slack at times as to what is good for us and habits. I will try to look at my liquid intake at meals. I had a low sugar attack just prior to church last night after choir pratice. Thank goodness I keep PB crackers in the car or in my purse. They saved the day. Good to see you again. Martha

This makes good sense and I'm very glad you have some answers to what's been going on. I have very bad bouts of sugar highs and lows but I know it's a direct result of how I am eating; the carbs and sugar (candy) causes extreme blood sugar highs and lows; when I'm doing well with the food and being very mindful of what I'm eating and when I'm eating, I feel much better physically. So I'm my worst enemy in this regard. Pam, when are you seeing Aranow? Reenie
