My Doctor Visit
I went to my surgeon yesterday. ...I had not seen him since my one year post op exam. He told me I am his Gastric Bypass Surgery poster child. I am a little anemic but other than that the bloods are good. I gained 12 pounds in 4 years, which, in his eyes, is a success story. He said if I just go back to basics, the 5 rules (which I now have attached to my refrigerator) the 12 pounds will come off quite easily. So I am going to GNC to get my 100% Whey Protein mix (I love that stuff) and my Power Crunch Bars in French Vanilla. I thought all the protein was making me constipated, but actually it was the lack of water. I'm happy that my visit went so well, and he is thrilled that I am doing as well as I am.
Just to let you know....it's NOT easy. I fight the demons EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY DAY. So maybe the answer is....just stick with the rules. I don't know.
Joanie
The Five Rules (per my surgeon):
1. Eat your protein first.
2. Drink at least 64 ounces of water daily.
3. Take your vitamins daily.
4. No snacking.
5. Exercise daily.
These are the rules he feels all WLS patients should live by forever. And I think he's right. You know, I am really happy for you. I'm happy you looked into what you needed and they can fix it. He said a lot of people are coming in and asking for 'revisions' because they gained weight. He asks A LOT of questions before he subjects people to testing, but he said most of the revisions that are needed are behavior modifications, and not anything physical. With you, it was different. You were eating the same and suddenly gaining. He said that is a sign that there could be a problem internally, but that what you are going through is very rare. Yes, you will have to go through this procedure. Is it worth it??? ABSOLUTELY! If I were in your shoes, I'd do it in the blink of an eye. That is only one of the amazing things about this board---we learn from each other.
Stay strong, my friend!
Joanie
Congratulations Joanie on having a great visit with your doctor!
I finally made an appointment with my surgery DR A for March. I didn't go last year so I'm ready. In the past couple of years I've gained 15 to 20 pounds. Its a constant fight.
What does help me is coming and reading the postings here. I don't always have anything to say but I lurk and learn.
Right now I know I'd do better if i was excersizing regularly. Thats something I need to work at.
I do beleive I have the light deprevation symdrom where I get down during the winter months. Normally I'm a happy person but lately as I get older this being dark when I get out of work is a bummer. I am thrilled that it is finally getting lighter out at night.
Now to get out there and excersize!
I can relate to the light depravation thing....I hate the cold, snow, ice...anything that has to do witb winter. I can't even stand landscape artwork with snow in it! When I was working, the gym was right next to my office, so I used to hit it 3 times a week before going to work. And I love going to the gym, I feel so much better when I do it....but now it's 50 miles round trip from my house, so it's kinda difficult (think gas prices and not working!). I have been looking and looking for work, but nothing has popped yet. It's so depressing being home, I hate it. We're going on vacation next week, then when I come back I really have to look harder.
Take care!
Joanie
