Endoscopy Update
Hi all, checking in on my scope procedure today. Met Dr. Thompson (Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston) in the a.m. for intake and then had the scope done early afternoon. He went all the way down into the pouch, checking the staple line for fissures, checking the size of the stoma, and the overall size of the pouch. I was sedated with a "twilight" ****tail I.V., but I went out like a light! The procedure was painless (cuz I wasn't awake) and I only have a mild sore throat. Dr. Thompson is a specialist in treating post-ops with weight gain enoscopically, with a handful of procedures depending on what's causing the gain. He says weight gains post-gastric bypass is almost always a result of one of the following: (1) the patient has failed to adopt behavioral change (healthy eating and rigorous and regular physical activity) and so begins to gain because of the food being ingested and the lack of physical activity; (2) emotional eating - psychological factors that the patient has not been able to successfully arrest; (3) anatomy - there's something wrong with the new "plumbing." When I explained during the intake what was going on with me - that despite efforts to stay healthy with good food choices and regular exercise, I am gaining. Of course, I have the emotional eating factor as well, and we talked about that - but he thought the problem I'm having with M&M's is not enough to contribute to the weight gain (I was 155 this morning). So, he wanted to go forward with the scope. It took about 2 hours from start to finish (prep, procedure, and recovery) - and the short of it is that my pouch has stretched abnormally, hence my insatiable hunger. I have to call his office tomorrow to get the details (I was out of it so did not talk to him afterwards) but the attending nurse told me my cir****tances warrant reducing the pouch again in size, which Dr. Thompson can do endoscopically. I plan to pursue this because I will not live my life FAT ever, ever again. I'd rather be dead. Thanks for all your good wishes and I'll keep you posted - I'm hoping to get in for the actual procedure in March. Hope my story helps someone out there. Love to you all, Reenie
