All About Me
Joy e-mailed me the other day to check up on me. After I updated her, she suggested that I share with the rest of you. I've probably updated you guys in bits and pieces, but here's the whole story.
About 6 weeks ago, I had surgery that was just supposed to be a simple bladder sling procedure. Turned out that I had a mass on the inside of my bladder that had to be removed. If I thought I had a tiny bladder before... sheesh! I'm mostly healed, but still having a couple of issues.
Totally unrelated to that surgery, Monday before last, I came home from work sick and just kept getting worse. I ended up in the emergency room and then admitted to the hospital for three days with what the docs think was a partial bowel blockage and distended intestines. They decided not to operate because it was a partial (not total) blockage, probably from adhesions, but I'm probably going to be facing the same thing in the future and will need surgery the next time. I'm getting better everyday and feel closer to normal.
I saw my pcp this morning and we went over the test results from my little hospital vacation. He thinks I may have had a massive infection in my upper and lower abdomen as well and that would explain why I'm better, but still a fan of porcelain bathroom fixtures. I'm on some heavy duty antibiotics. My blood work from the hospitals shows that my protein and calcium levels are in the toilet. There has been a sharp decline since my last round of blood work. My sugar level is also up, which is interesting since I've never been diabetic. This is a chicken and the egg scenario. Is my blood work bad because I was sick or did my protein, calcium and sugar levels contribute to my sickness. What we decided is that I'm going to pump up the protein and calcium and do my blood work over in January.
Many Hugs,
Connie
I'm all turned around about you, my friend. I thought what was going on with you was related to a bad back and that you were on the mend with that. Am I totally wrong about this? As for the mass on your bladder, is this related in any way to the other intestinal issues going on? I am very worried about your blood work, when will you get that redone? This is all very scary stuff, Connie. Please give us an update as soon as possible. Have you been vigilent about taking your vitamins and supplements? Please post soon. Hugs and more hugs, Reenie
Well it was the back... and then the bladder... and then the intestines. Now it's hives and bruises. I don't think the bladder had anything to do with the intestinal issues because the mass was inside the bladder. I'm worried about my blood work also. I have no idea what is going on with my body, but it seems to be in a general state of revolt. The slightest bump leave big ugly bruises. The rubber hoses that they used to take my blood left perfect dark purple circles around my biceps. Now I have hives that are driving me crazy. The weird thing is that they start along my scars from skin reduction and spread from there. I have them on the insides of my arms and along my abdominal incision. Ever hear if hives on the scars?
I'm religious about my vitamins, except for the calcium because of my kidneys. I've started taking the calcium and will risk kidney stones. I've also been protein loading. The doctor did say that my sugar might have been high because I'd been on IVs for several days. I'll get blood work done again in a month. As of last week, just about every blood level I've got is in the toilet.
Hugs,
Connie
This is all very weird and very scary. Please keep us posted. I can't imagine what the hives are about except perhaps an allergic reaction to anything you were treated with in the hospital? I sure hope you have a solid PCP who is on top of this for you. What about your WLS surgeon, should you be letting him/her know what's going on? Be in touch, ok kiddo? And be well. Love ya, Reenie
Hi Connie;
I'm sorry that I'm so late replying here, but I've been away from the computer most of the time of late for various reasons which I'll explain at a later time. As for your situation........what can I say but "OH EEEK!!!".....not an expression I normally use, but nothing else comes to mind!! I'm really at a loss for words (and totally bummed) except to say that I"m thinking of and Praying for you, kiddo!! I hope that your next round of bloodwork brings better news.
Mike
