Passing out?

Okay, I seem to recall Connie mentioning this once but not sure, and hopefully she's not sitting around on the computer all day when she should be resting anyway! So, here is the deal: I get up this morning and eat a banana. I have to then almost immediately hit the toilet. Now I don't dump on fruit, and for whatever reason it just stimulated me. I get up and move around a little - feel a little tired and worn out but nothing that's a big deal. Decide to go take a shower. Well, apparently my first mistake was raising my hands above my head with the back scrubber. It was all downhill from there. It was too hot, too steamy, too dizzy... You know when you feel like you are just being a weenie? Like when you are tired and want to lay down but know you need to get up and do stuff? Because if you don't, everyone is going to go "Oh there she goes again...another nap" or whatever. Well, at some point you should listen to your body. So I am in the shower and kept having this self talk about how I was being a weenie. I really wanted to sit down in the tub but was convincing myself I was just wanting to wimp out. I hurried to rinse my hair and tried to get out of there asap and then ::WHAM:: down I go. I'm okay - don't think I bruised a thing. Thing about passing out is that you kind of crumple and the fall is not as hard as if you trip. I was able to get my hands out and keep myself from doing any damage, thankfully. But now the room is spinning out of control and I have to go to the bathroom again....bad! I don't know how, but I was able to get up and put a towel on my head and turn the water off. Then I sat my butt down on the can and stayed there for an inordinantely long period of time. I had diarrhea and bad, too. So I'm sitting here wondering how common it is for us to get dizzy. Like how many of us go through this and how often? Because I'm hard headed and don't want to go to the doctor right now, I just want to hear what everyone else has gone through. If I continue to feel dizzy throughout the day I will relent and see the doctor, but right now I just want to rest and see if I can figure out what the hell is going on. I don't know if it was low blood pressure or some bizzare dumping episode or what. Anyone else have these times they've dealt with this? Dina

Hey, First, Glad you made it out of the shower without hurting yourself. Second, If you are not a whole lot better soon, Go to the Doctor. It sounds like to me, that it was a combo type thing of dumping on the bananna & dehydration. I get the dizzy feeling if I have gone too long without eating or drinking. Are you drinking enough water? Has this happened before? I no one-time last summer I had been shopping in Wally-World & became dizzy in the check-out stand. thought nothing of it-Walked out side started to walk to my car & all of a sudden I was on the ground (120 degree ground) Found out it was due to dehydration. Be careful, it may be a bug, or could be something you need to have checked. So if not better now, I would call the Doc's office. Marilyn, the Bearlady

I think you saw how skinny you are, couldn't believe it and passed out. Anway, I believe both Reenie and Connie have had similar issues. Take care of yourself.

I find that since WLS I have a tendency to sudden drops in blood pressure--i.e. when I stand up too fast, I tend to get dizzy. It is likeliest to happen after eating carbs, so I tend to think of it as a type of dumping-related symptom. Sunday I came close to passing out at a church picnic. My 4 year old grandson said something I did not hear and I leaned in to listen. At the same time he jumped up in the air and his head hit my nose with a thud. The only thing that kept me from passing out was knowing how much it would scare him. I guess it isn't broken--just bruised, but it sure hurt!!! The funny thing was later he looked at me and said, "Grandma, don't put your head down, I'm going to jump!" I know that story did not help a bit--just thought you might get a chuckle! Joy

OK, guilty for being here. I went with my dad to get a door from the hardware store. When I was coming in the door, my son called to tell me that my mother had texted a message to him to tell him to call me and tell me to check my e-mail. You'd think she'd either call me or text me, but she's a little strange. Anyway, there was no e-mail from her so don't know what that was about, but thought I'd stop by and see what was going on. As soon as I'm done, I promise that I'm on my way to a nap.... right after I pick up the cat who's being shaved at the groomer's, much to her dismay. I think the culprit was the banana on an empty stomach. I have serious dumping and low blood sugar issues. If I had eaten a banana first thing in the morning with no protein in my stomach first, the exact same thing would have happened to me. You probably had an insulin ru****'s my understanding that if you eat something high in sugar on an empty stomach, the pancreas goes into a frenzy and dumps insulin causing the swoons. The funny thing for me is that normally, I will dump on anything more than 13 or 14 grams of sugar. If I get an insulin dump like that, the fastest way to curb it is to start eating sugar until it mellows out. It's a roller coaster and a cheap high all rolled into one. Woohoo! Protein will also pull me out of it, but not as fast as straight sugar in the form of candy or something. Did you feel like you had serious internal shakes? If I have the shakes, it's insulin. If I'm just woozy, it low blood pressure and the best way to remedy that for me is an increase in fluids and to up my sodium a little. My blood pressure stays at about 103 over 57 so my nephrologist and pcp keep telling me to push sodium to help me retain some of the fluids I drink and keep my blood pressure up. Of course, the same dizzy/woozy thing happened to me when I was pregnant ...... Connie

I don't have anything real intelligent to say other than I agree with everyone here about it being a nasty bad horrible dump thingy. the banana was the culprit i think too. its funny but reading all of this jsut rmeinds me that now after 2 yearss whenever i have an issue where i have diahrea or shakeys its usually when i've had a banana. they really are high in sugar huh? i have to have one everyday becasue of the potassium. if i don't have the banana then i do get leg cramps. i have always been that way. i think i might have trained my body to do that? all i know is if i eat the banana first without having a cheeses stick or some other thing i will have a episode of the runs or a headache. i do get low blood sugar and if i remember right the last time i went to the GP she said that my blood pressure was alittle bit low. never did have that before! I do think too if it continues you should call your doctor and see what he thinks. good luck and god bless pam

OK Dina, I'm chiming in.... I agree with everyone else about it being a sugar thing. You dumped...I still do this regularly...simple carbs and high sugar (above 9 grams) send me in that same tail spin. I do still eat bananas (a half only) on ocassion, but generally only with some peanut butter smeared on the slices. The protein in the peanut butter seems to off-set the sugar rush, like Connie said. I've gotten real good at recognizing an on coming tail spin and take appropriate action - either down some protein or lay down and wait it out. Apparently, I still have a dang tiny pouch so volume is a definite problem, so if I've 'filled up' with something too high in sugar I'm in for a rough ride. Anyway, you get what I mean..... Low blood pressure has also been a problem...since surgery I usually run on about 80/40. Apparently most folks are completely passed out and non-functional at that level but somehow I'm working with it. Hope you're feeling better!! Va
