Is anyone else having problems with depression since surgery. I wanted to ask the people that are at the same time frame I am in. At almost 2yrs out I just wondering if I am normal. I am having problems with mood swings one time I am fine and the next I just feel hopeless. And of course food is not the option anymore. Just checking to see if anyone else is having this problem. Thanks for the answers in advance. Marissa

I had issues before and after surgery and was on Zoloft prior to surgery. I had taken myself off the medication as I had felt I was strong enough to handle my problems on my own. while I was in the hospital my Blood pressure shot up and anti-depressants helped rather than more Blood pressue medications. I am now on Lexapro and have been most of the 2 years since surgery. It is non-habit forming and I do not have the mood swings. Hope this helps.

Marissa, Pre-op I was on Prozac. It was originally prescribed for severe PMS mood swings. Once I was on it, I found that my mood was much more "even" than before - even when I wasn't PMS-ing. Post-op I had to switch to different meds because Prozac only comes in capsule or liquid form. I was told that I wouldn't be able to take capsules any longer and the liquid form was too disgusting to take on a daily basis. So - after a few trial and error meds, I am now on Zoloft and Wellbutrin. I'm fairly sane and don't have low-lows. I have a lot going on in my personal life right now, but thanks to the drugs, I'm not losing my mind completely. I was, at first, embarrassed to admit that I was on anti-depressants...especially to my family (where no one admits problems and stuffs their emotions down as far as they can), but once I got over the "stigma" of being on medication, I tell everyone how wonderful they have been for me. I honestly don't know where I'd be right now if I weren't on these drugs. So - if you are having a tough time, please go see your doctor and discuss options for you. Don't be embarrassed and don't put it off. Your mental health is just as important as your physical well being. Good luck! -Wendy

Hi Wendy, As you no I have had many problems in my personal & professional life lately & part of that has been caused from depression. I had been on lexapro, but because of no insurance for over 6 months had gone off of it. The depression was out of control & caused my behavior problems. So as for the wellbutrin it should work only because you have had bypass surgery do not get any of the time released stuff. Get the regular stuff & you might have to take it twice a day due to our malobsorption problems. I am on a lot of different boards including this one & a lot of us deal with depression I think because they operate on our stomach not our minds & we no longer have that food to help us out. Everyone is different on what works & what does not, so try the wellbutrin if in a few weeks you do not notice a big difference in your mood, have your Doc change it to something else. There is so much out there, that sometimes it is a pain in the neck to find what does work, but keep trying tell you do. Depression is nothing to fool around with. IT KILLS. Hang in There!! There is a lot of pressure in todays world, & we can all use a little or a lot of help these days. Marilyn, the Bearlady P.S. I do like your new photo, I can finally see the new you & you look great!! That should help, Right!!
