Rapid weight loss on gabapentin?

I was injured pretty badly at work and they have put me on Tramadol, Flexeril and Gabapentin. I don't know if it is from the meds or the shoulder pain, but I am suddenly and rapidly losing weight. 15 pounds in the last two weeks. I don't seen to have any appetite at all. The thought of eating nauseates me. I was told to stop losing weight and have the excess skin removed and have appointment with the surgeon later in January. My weight has been fairly stable for about 6 months. My whole family is having a hissy. At 180 I can hardly be considered underweight, but I am 5'10" tall and have been told I have about 30 pounds of excess skin. At the rate I am losing I am afraid. I am a nurse and did look up the side effects of these drugs. Gabapentin usually causes an acutual weight gain, but can cause unexplained weight loss. Flexeril can cause anorexia but is considered rare. Has anyone else experienced such a phenomena? As a health care professional I am curious to know.

Hi I would talk to you WLS surgeon to make sure those drugs do not hurt your pouch or could cause long-term side effects later on. Be careful, there are a lot of drugs we are not suppose to be on due to the wls. Most Dr.s are not eve aware of it. Check it out with your Surgeon. HE SHOULD NO FOR SURE. Also a week or so Reenie posted a list of drugs we can & cannot take, check that out & make sure those are not on the bad list. Marilyn, the Bearlady

Wow Crystal! I don't know about those meds, but obviously you got what I would consider the lucky end of the stick on that. Well, for ME. I wish I could find something that would help me lose more weight. Actually I did have a med I tried last year that did that to me, but it had some serious side effects and I had to stop. I would LOVE to find something to get me to lose more weight now though. I wouldn't worry too awful much about it right now though. You might get quite thin, but perhaps by the time they take you off you will have leveled out. Either way, if you get plastics, it's always good to be slightly under weight when you have them done so you get a good result. So hopefully you will find you look fabulous (and feel great) by then. I am sorry to hear about how badly you were injured. Hopefully they won't have to do surgery on your back or anything. Take care of yourself and get off the psych ward! Dina

Crystal, Hope you are feeling better and things have leveled out. It'**** and miss with how prescriptions affect me these days. I find that sometimes I have to take two courses of antibiotics to clear up the simplest of infections. I suspect that the pills are washed out of my stomach before they really digest and have a chance to work. I'm going to start asking for everything I can in liquid form. Hope you feel better. Connie
