A brief re-introduction
My name is Nicole. I am a mom to 3 kids ages 11,10 and 6. And happily married. I am a stay at home mom but very busy with volunteer work at school and I am PTO president this year and chairperson for the Fresh Air Fund. So I do keep busy. Also, I am returning to college this fall. Scared to death! But that is another post! I haven't been around much the past few months and before that, mostly a lurker. I post mainly on the post op pregnancy board but sadly, I recently miscarried. So, I thought I would try to get back into this group to get back on track and see how you all are doing. When I was pregnant I found I was hungry a lot. I mean, all of the time. Luckily I craved healthy food. Mainly cucumbers. So I lost weight while pregnant but since I miscarried, I have been depressed and find myself eating too much junk. I need to get under control before I actually start gaining. I am about 20 lbs to goal so I really dont want that to happen. So starting today, I am going to start using fitday again and try to get back on track. I have been eating way too many carbs lately. I totally can eat things like chips and pretzels and before I would just take a couple on my plate and that was it. Definite portion control. But here lately I have been taking the bag and eating 2 handfulls instead of like 4 or 5 chips. So I need to just cut them out completely. Anyway, that is about it. Just hoping to get back into the swing of this board.
Nic

I have never lost a child to a miscarriage so I can ONLY imagine how sad it must make you feel. We never forget those who go on before us but time has a way of helping to heal the heartache.
Now is the time to reach out for support and I applaud you doing that. This board is a WEALTH of support and love...
Below is a post that I have used in the past for situations similar to yours..
and ya know....
it's a GOOD reminder for me as well!!!
"PRACTICE what you preach, Cath"!!!! hahahah
Hope it helps!!!

~Stress Eating and getting BACK on track~
I was corresponding with a friend this morning and decided to share my thoughts here in hopes that it will help someone else.
Stress eating is our enemy (post-op as well as pre-op) .
What I find helps me more than ANYTHING is to have foods readily available so I am not tempted to go back to old habits.
Take string cheese (the low-fat kind) and wrap it in a little mustard + turkey lunch meat. You can do a BUNCH of those, wrap in Saran & freeze them... take out what you need as you go. They travel WELL in a little cooler.
Those big cans of chicken are good to mix up a chicken salad (I add extra eggs for more protein) or tuna to have on hand (SKIP the crackers/bread!!!!
Soups are good for the *hungers*... I make tortilla soup or beef soup with LIMITED carbs (any beans especially lima beans - YUMMM - and they are GOOD carbs) & freeze up small containers to microwave. (See recipe for the tortilla soup below). I add all sorts of veggies, lots of onions to both as well as LOTS of mushrooms....... did I say LOTS of mushrooms!!
Another GOOD stand-by is turkey burgers (these freeze up well too):
2 pounds of ground turkey
A-1 or any other steak seasoning
3 eggs (more protein)
chopped onion (load on the ONIONS!!!! hahahah)
garlic or any other seasoning
a little olive oil (for moisture)
I grill these as small patties on my george foreman grill & freeze em (you can double the recipe)... sometimes have em for breakfast with a scrambled egg or just a snack. If you don't have a grill - a fry pan works well cuz you aren't frying - just pan grilling
When I pass the Sonic (or any other fast-food-junk-joint) I say OUT LOUD to myself (as I drive on down the road)....
*if you STILL want (whatever) in 30 minutes, you can go back!!* and I NEVER do!!!!
The key to this is to PLAN ahead!!! and don't forget the water
fitday.com is an AWESOME tool - you can track what you are eating there for free --- and be honest because no one else sees it!!
I try & keep the carbs 30 or under and calories low.
Cath's Tortilla Soup
(I add lots of *veggie-stuff* to the basic recipe and skip the tortilla chips as well as the high calorie avacados - or limit it to a bite or 2)
Ingredients
4 large or 5 small chicken breasts
2 Tbsp Olive Oil
1 Small chopped onion
1 small can chopped green chiles
1 16 oz. can chopped tomatoes (can use Rotel)
1 package Taco seasoning
4 cans chicken broth
*2 cups frozen corn
cilantro (chopped to taste)
1 avocado
**Monterrey Jack cheese
Directions
Saute onion in a little olive oil
Add all ingredients EXCEPT for the avocado & cheese.
Simmer over a medium heat until chicken is fully cooked.
Serve
With tortilla chips.
Top with cheese & avocado.
~~Note - if you like a thicker soup, masa flour may be added. Also, sour cream topping is a favorite of some. This recipe is easily doubled and easy to freeze in small containers for a fast re-heated meal.
*Skip the corn or cut back to 1 cup for low-carb choice
**Substitute low-fat mozerella cheese

Hi Nic.....
First off, let me offer my sympathy on your loss. While I can not totally share your pain, I'm no stranger to the effects of miscarriage. My wife had a miscarriage prior to each successful pregnancy (2 of them). As both of our daughters were born in perfect health, we try to look at the miscarriages as God's way of providing us with the children he wanted us to have.
It sounds like you are approaching your "getting back on track" the right way. We are glad to have you back with us and will do what we can to help. Please stay in touch.
