HELP.....I'M SO CONFUSED!!!
Hi all.....I'm really confused these days (even more than my normal state of confusion)!! In reading posts from this and other boards on this site, there seems to be a wide variety of standards for dietary supplements, especially dosages. I'm starting to worry that I'm not doing the right thing. I'd appreciate your input on how much you are taking of:
1) Multivitamins (I'm taking 2 Centrum chewables daily)
2) Calcium ( I"m taking 1200 mg, calcium citrate daily)
3) B 12 ( I"m taking 1000 mg weekly)
Please let me know what you are doing so that I can relax or call my surgeon! Thanks.
Mike
Mike,
I take 2000- 3000 MG of B-12 a day. I would definately up your b-12
and soon. If you are only taking it once a week you are probably very low
& also very tired. The rest looks good. The only other thing I take is
a B-complex that has C B-6 & B-1 in it to hel with my stressful life.
If you haven't had any blood work done for awhile. It's time. They can till
you if you should be on Iron or not.

A part of my yearly followup is lab work to test fro deficiencies. If you are doing this and looking OK, don't worry. If you have any problems, they will show up and you can adjust dosages. I started b12 shots due to mine, but everything else looked great. If your surgeon did not do this, insist that he do so!

Ok...here goes. I decided to stick with the vitamins formulated specifically for WLS patients. Some people have told me that regular vitamins have the same ingredients, but upon checking labels compared to the Optisource, I've yet to find that. I take 4 Optisource chewables a day and then I get the Bariatric Advantage chewable calcium and take 2 of them a day. The proof, of course, is in your bloodwork. Originally, I had been taking Viactiv calcium chewables, but they were not calcium citrate, so I was not getting enough calcium. Once I started the Bariatric Advantage, that was corrected. I'm not taking any B 12, but my bloodwork has been fine, so I never brought it up. Hope this helps....

Hey Mike,
I take Shaklee Vitimins. they have much more bioavailability than other vitimins and are all natural and easy to digest.
Here goes:
2 Vita Lea (multi vit.mineral)
6 super Cal/Mag Plus (calcium,magnesium,phosphorus,vit D, vit K..etc) = 1200 mg of calcium daily
Iron plus C complex 1 daily
B-complex 2 daily (81 mcg B-12 + other B Vitimins)
Herbalax 2-4 daily (for regularity)
My doctor didn't prescribe a regimine. I had blood work by my PCP because I was so fatigued and found out that I was extremely low on B-12. Up until that point, I didn't really take anything although all my WLS friends kept getting on to me. I take a B complex because all the B vitimins work together and you don't want to get them out of balance as you would when taking a B-12 only supplement. Each doctor has their own idea about what and how much we need to take. Take the regimine prescribed to you or one that you are comfortable with and if your blood work is good, then it's working for you and you don't need to worry about it. I hadn't had labs until then either (even tho all my WLS friends were on to me about it) and it took me feeling so bad that I couldn't put one foot in front of the other to listen. I had the labs and it came up with a reason for my fatigue. Within a week of getting strict about my vitimin regimine, I felt like a totally new person. I also add Shaklee's protein powder to just about everything now. I make awesome protein cookies that taste just like no bake cookies and are made with splenda and sugar-free peanut butter. My family loves them and I can't keep them more than a day or so until they are gone.
Hope that helps.

Reenie, if you're still looking for a source for the Shaklee vitamins you can e-mail me - [email protected]. I can help you out.

Winnie I'd love that cookie receipe it sounds great!
Vitimins...I still take the flintstones chewable that DR Aranow had us take right after surgery. 3 calcium chewys a day, and 2X a week. I take 1000 gm of B12 because of my blood levels which are fine now. Guess its different for everyone but I'd be interested in trying the biratric vitamins that one of the other people talked about.
Pamela,
Here's the cookie recipe:
1 stick of butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon real vanilla
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup sugar free peanutbutter
2 cups splenda or 1 cup splenda for baking
3 cups quick oats
1/4 - 1/2 cup Shaklee Instant Protein (or other unflavored protein powder that can be heated)
Optional: (I add these from time to time for variety)
1/2 cup unsweetened coconut
1/2 - 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
1/2 cup cocoa powder (if you're craving chocolate)
melt the butter in a deep pan....add milk, salt, vanilla, splenda, and protein. Stir well. Heat over medium to boiling. Boil for 1 minute. Take off heat and add peanutbutter, stir until smooth and creamy. Add oats, and any other options (if using cocoa, add before stirring in oats). Spoon onto wax paper and let cool. Store in a airtight container.
Watch out...these are addicting and your family will eat them up before you get any if you don't hide some!!!
I also make a yummy Oatmeal-chocolate chip protein cookie that you can't tell is low sugar and full of protein. I've been asked over and over for that recipe when I take them somewhere.
Enjoy
Whitney
