help needed possible liver problem
Hi All,
I have a question/problem that I hope some one might be able to help with. For the last 3 months I have been having signs/symptoms of gallstones. My gall bladder was removed 5.5 years ago. I am 16 months post op. My surgeon isn't very concerned so I went back to my gastroenterologist and she drew blood to test my liver functions. She said depending on the blood results I will probably need to have an ultrasound and a MRI done on my liver.
Has any one had any problems or similar symptoms with their liver since surgery? I am B12 deficient and take supplements for it. My last set of bloods had shown a vitamin d deficiency and my calcium levels were elevated. I am going for new blood tests next week and will be discussing all this with my pcp.
I was just curious to see if any one else had a similar problem.
Thanks,
Arlene

I am dealing with high liver enzimes they are haveing a problem finding out what is causeing this. I had my surgery on 3-23-2004 and I think I may also be B-12 deficient I have been very tired, lightheaded, weak, and pale and have heard these are some symtoms of low B-12. I am seeing my pcp tomorrow to have it checked. They do think my liver could have something to do with the rapid weight loss. If you find out any more info I would love to know and if I get any more info I'll post.
Hope I've been of some help.

You bring a whole new perspective to the post-op thinking, Arlene. We are so wrapped up in "losing the weight" that we tend to lose sight of the health ramifications of the surgery and how we must remain vigilent for the rest of our lives on taking care of ourselves as people who have a different anatomy than others. I will try to find time to research this issue for you, and for all of us. In the meantime, please stay on top of this and make sure your doctors do whatever it takes to get to the bottom of your issues. God bless, Reenie
Hi all.
After the results from my blood tests came in, I had to see an endocrinologist. My vitamin D levels were still low and my calcium was elevated. My PTH was also elevated. (parahyperthyroidism). The endocrinologist has upped my vitamin d an additional 800mg a day. He is hoping that this will straighten out my vit d levels along with the calcium and the pth. If not I will be adding prescription vit d supplemints to go with my prescription b12. They will be retesting my levels in 3 weeks to see how this is working. If the pth is still elevated, they are going to start looking at my thyroid for other possible problems. I never thought when I had this surgery that I would have to be this attuned to my health or this proactive in my healthcare.
All the blood tests showed that my liver was working normally. I am afraid to go for the mri/ultrasound because that might not show anything either. The only thing I can think of is going to the er the next time I start getting these gallstone like pains again.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Arlene
