I made it!
Well, I completed the road race this weekend. I finished the three mile in 32 minutes, about two minutes slower then I had hoped. But I finished 19/38 in my age group, and just over 600th out of 1300 who ran the three mile. I have to tell you that the best part was having my wife and children meeting me at the finish line. My girls were so excited and we quickly walked the six blocks back to the starting line so I could run the one mile with them. After the race, we had a family picture taken and I made up little cards of which I sent one to my Doctor and one to the surgical recovery floor at the hospital to thanks for helping me to get my life back.
I going to continue to run and as a little present, I bought a MP3 player so I have some good tunes as I start to build up my mileage. My family wants to train and have us all run the three mile next year, so now my goal is to run the five mile, then run the three with my family. It sounds like a lot, but four months ago it sounded like a lot to run the 3 and then run the one, and I had no problems. Funny what we can do when we set our minds to it.
Thanks for all of your comments. You wouldn't believe the support and phone calls I have gotten from people who saw my name listed in the newspaper and called to congratulate me. I quess what I'm saying is if I can do it, anybody can. We all impose restrictions on ourselves, but it is mostly in the head. Believe me, I fight it almost everyday when I'm out there running. You have to listen to your body, but yet the mind will tell you that it can't be done when it can. I fight this battle more then others. As I lined up for the race on Saturday I was nervous about making it, posting a good time etc. All of this despite the fact that I was ready, had run more then three miles, and had proven I could run it in under 30 minutes. None the less, I was questioning myself and doubting myself. I will tell you that with some pride I had a guy *****ally thought he was something next to me. As I past him at the two mile mark, I smiled to myself and chalked up a little victory for the former fatties.
Congrats Ken! Thats really awesome! Very awesome that your family is getting into everything with you. I can't wait until I am up to speed with my husband (well at least participating) he is mountain bike king... So to even remotely be able to do a fraction of what he does on a bike will be a huge achievement! Heck getting my big but on a bike will be a milestone!
but it will feel soooo nice to be able to go biking as a family for once and not be on the "sidelines" WANTING to do those things... same with kayaking... Best wishes to you!
