Its been awhile since i've done a post but i have a wonderful trip coming up in the next 2 weeks. my boyfriend is taking me to the bahama's!!! i've extremely excited about this and have gone out there and bought a whole summer wardrobe to take with me. its just such fun to shop right now. plus i have not one single stitch of summer clothing even my sandles are too big. anyways got the clothes covered. even got a new bathing suit. looking forward to getting on the plane and not having to ask for an extender! My question is for all you lucky peoplle who have traveled after your surgery. I've conquered the food issues for just about any situation but traveling such a long ways from home and not knowing what they have available makes me curiuos. my boyfriend laughs at me cause in my already packed suitcase...(2 weeks til we leave and i've had mine packed since he asked me to go over a month ago hehehe) i've got snacks in there plus a jar of peanut butter, 3 cans of tuna, protein bars & my protein powder. I dont' use that much protein powder its rare now cause i get what i need from food but i figured if worse came to worse i'd be able to use that to get what i need. i'm not a big sea food eater. and i'd be alittle nervous about trying new things so far away from home even if i'd not had this surgery. i'm a year out now and feel wonderful. any suggestions? good luck and god bless, pam

Have fun on your trip! I went to the Dominican Republic in February and stayed at an "all inclusive" type resort. You won't need the food you packed if that is the case for you. At the breakfasts, I concentrated on the eggs, cheeses and fruits. I also ate oatmeal some mornings for a change. Lunch time was lots of salad with fresh veggies, cheeses and broiled meats or seafood topping the salad. Delish! Dinners were meats/seafood, veggies, salads----basically most meals were "tastes" of this and that. I ate what I wanted, just very little of it. If something looked interesting to me, I'd have a spoonful of it. I also drank....a bloody mary on the beach, rum and diet coke in the afternoons....a glass of wine at night. Listen to your pouch carefully. After all that----I still lost 2 pounds while I was on vacation! I did A LOT of walking, and went to the gym every other day. The protein bars came in handy on the plane when we did not have time to eat. Airport food is junky---while my friends ate bagels and cream cheese, I ate my protein bar and felt better for it. I have a habit of always making sure I have some sort of protein bar with me just in case. Relax and have fun on your trip! Joan

Hi Pamela; While I haven't yet taken any prolonged trips post-surgery, but I have taken a few "weekenders". I have found that if I use a similar formula as I do at home, everything works out. I go for the protein first, then the veggies, then the starch. I find that when traveling, my biggest problems are remembering my vitamins and calcium and getting enough liquid. I bought myself a small (16 oz.) Nalgene water bottle and a holder which clips on my belt. That really makes a big difference. Also having a few protein bars around just in case would probably be a good idea. I agree that you should listen to you pouch and you should do fine! Have a great trip!!! Mike

Pam, I think you've gotten some great advice so far. I've traveled pretty regularly since surgery and haven't had any problems at all. I'd ditch the cans of tuna because they're extra weight and you'll have to deal with the mess of opening the cans and having things smell like tuna. I probably wouldn't take the peanut butter either, but that's just me. I like to travel light. I usually pack beef jerkey, nuts and protein bars and that's enough. When I eat out, I order a cup of soup or salad and eat off of everyone else's plate. My general rule of thumb is to stick to the left half of the menu because that's where the soup, salad and appetizers usually are. Because you probably can't take the leftovers with you, always start small and know that you can always order more if you're not satisfied. Have a wonderful time and let us know how it goes. Connie
