Protein Intake
Hi Terri,
My doctor stresses two protein shakes per day to supplement any protein I am getting through my food as a lifetime thing, not just for a year or two. I get anywhere from 60 to 100 grams through the shakes (depending on if I get that 2nd shake in), and probably 40 to 60 grams from my food.
What does your doctor say ? Each doctor has a different regime for his patients and just be cause Dr Mike tells us one thing, doesn't mean that is what your doctor would say.
Hugs,
Mo
I log everything I eat into fitday.com. My daily caloric intake ranges from 700-1000 per day. I normally eat around 800 calories on a normal day.
I drink a shake at 5:30-6:00 am and another at either 12 noon or after lunch around 2:30 pm.
For breakfast I may eat 1 boiled or scrambled egg and 2 strips of bacon.
For lunch, its usually a piece of meat left over from dinner unless I decide that I want something specific. (1/2 pork chop, 1/4 chicken breast, chicken fingers, Chic Fil A nuggets, turkey breast and swiss cheese, 1/2 cheeseburger etc)
For snacks, I eat boiled eggs, 1oz cheddar cheese, peanuts, pork rinds, deli meats, mild hot wings, meat (leftover from lunch or dinner), eggs and bacon, protein bar and applesauce or fresh fruit.
A great snack is my philly cheesesteak wrap. (deli rare roast beef, sauteed with onion and seasoning and then add melted provolone. - 40g per bariatric serving ! ) You can put it in a tortilla shell if you want bread, but I normally eat it without the bread.
Chicken salad or tuna salad are great snacks too. Sometimes at lunch I will pan fry a piece of flounder or talapia in canola oil.
When I eat dinner, I add 1/4 cup of cooked veggies or a cup of salad.
Since I published a cookbook for bariatric patients, it is easier for me to find a variety of foods so that I do not get bored. I also own a catering company so its fun to experiment.

Yes you should increase your protein intake. You are supposed to do a minimum of 100g per day. Should you have any questions, you can always write Dr. Monica Ganz - [email protected].
