DEXA Scan Cost
I haven't talked to a doctor, no. I'm anticipating that the insurance company would deny me the test for a couple of reasons:
(3) Although calcium absorption is known to be impacted by WLS, there doesn't seem to be a guideline out as far as protocols for monitoring bone loss proactively. I haven't heard of any WLS surgeons in central or northern Jersey recommending periodic bone scans, much less PCPs.
(2) I'm only thirty-one, and for a 'normal' person they don't typically do it before 40 and/or menopause.
And finally, the NUMBER ONE reason insurance companies don't pay for things that common sense says would be a good idea....
(1) I'll probably be insured by somebody else by the time my bones deteriorate enough for me to break something.
Until that happens, I think they're going to say that there is no medical need. Personally, I'd like to be able to monitor my bone density over time, just like I'm monitoring my blood levels. So I think I'd be willing to pay for the test on my own - if it doesn't cost a fortune..
If anybody does know what it costs, I'd appreciate the info.

I had a baseline bone scan done before surgery. I was having some problem with arthritis and my rheumatologist ordered it and my insurance paid for it. At the time they said I had the bones of a 20 year old (I'm 53). I guess that means they hurt but won't break easily
I will have it redone, probably in 2006. My calcium blood work came back great, and my arthritis is so much better from the weight loss, that I am not worried at this point.
Good luck on yours.
